Another major Star Trek: Voyager star is coming back!
As a hardcore Star Trek fan who grew up watching Voyager, I can’t contain my excitement about Harry Kim’s return to the franchise! It’s been 23 years since we last saw him on that starship, and now he’s back, all grown-up as a Lieutenant. I remember him as an ensign, struggling with navigation and holograms, but it seems like he’s finally getting his due recognition.
Star Trek: Lower Decks brings back a cherished character from Star Trek: Voyager, offering fans an eagerly anticipated reappearance of this iconic figure. Many central characters from the franchise have made their comeback. Kathryne Janeway and Chakotay resurfaced on Prodigy, while Seven of Nine and Tuvok were spotted in Star Trek: Picard. The Doctor made a return on Prodigy and will also feature in the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Tom Paris injected the essence of Voyager into Star Trek: Lower Decks.
As a dedicated Star Trek: Lower Decks gamer, I’ve been eagerly waiting for familiar faces to reappear. It seems that day has finally come! The buzz is that Harry Kim, skillfully portrayed by Garrett Wang, is making a comeback in the Star Trek universe. This exciting news unfolds as we approach the fifth and final season of Lower Decks.
In the concluding scene of the latest trailer for Lower Decks’ final season, Kim seems to be conversing with various iterations of himself. Each of these individuals remains an ensign, except possibly the “actual” Kim who has presumably advanced to Starfleet Lieutenant status after spending seven years on Voyager.
Although it’s been over two decades since the end of Starship Voyager, and close to three decades since its debut, some fans might find it a bit surprising that Ensign Kim was promoted to Lieutenant in Lower Decks so late. However, it’s important to remember that the storyline of Lower Decks begins approximately three years after Voyager returned from the Delta Quadrant.
As a passionate Star Trek: Lower Decks fan, tracing an exact timeline from the series’ debut to its current position can be tricky, but it’s safe to assume that Lieutenant Kim is relatively new in her role, having served perhaps just a few years, or even less at this point.
It seems quite probable that he will receive another promotion not long from now, perhaps even before the episode featuring Kim and Wang airs.
Currently, there are just three characters left who haven’t made a return appearance, but given Jennifer Lien’s multiple troubles with her private life and legal issues, it seems unlikely that we will see Kes again.
