Dr. Dre’s former divorce therapist sues mogul, alleging harassment, ‘homophobic’ threats
As a movie lover with a penchant for biopics and courtroom dramas, this latest chapter in the Dr. Dre saga has me intrigued. The life of a legendary figure like Dr. Dre is always filled with twists and turns, but this one seems to be veering towards the dramatic side of things.
The next episode for Dr. Dre might be set in the courtroom.
The well-known rapper and business magnate is being sued for $10 million by his former divorce lawyer, Dr. Charles Sophy – a renowned psychotherapist among celebrities. In a court filing made on Monday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Dr. Sophy alleges that his previous client subjected him to an “ongoing and malicious series of harassment.
I find myself donning a protective vest whenever I venture outdoors these days, feeling uneasy about leaving my sanctuary, and always keeping a vigilant eye behind me – all due to the relentless intimidation that’s been happening over the past few months, as detailed in court records obtained by The Times.
On Thursday, I didn’t receive an immediate response from Young’s legal representative when I reached out to The Times for comment.
In the year 2018, Sophy started providing marriage counseling for Dr. Dre (whose real name is Andre Young) and his then-spouse, Nicole Young. Both parties agreed to have Sophy mediate the conditions of their separation, as stated in a filing made public on a Wednesday. After putting forth considerable effort, working independently and impartially, Sophy aimed to help the couple resolve their disagreements. However, communication between Sophy and the couple ended in 2021 – coinciding with the finalization of their divorce.
Approximately fourteen months following the initial event, Young unexpectedly and aggressively initiated a prolonged series of disrespectful communications, late-night messages to remind Dr. Sophy he wouldn’t ‘forget’ her, and derogatory remarks about homosexuality, as stated in the lawsuit. The document further noted that Young expressed his anger over the outcome of the mediation by targeting Sophy.
The filing includes approximately a dozen texts exchanged between Young and Sophy from February to August 2023. Some of these texts, as claimed by the psychiatrist from Beverly Hills, include derogatory language towards homosexual individuals (such as “You’re a b—“). In these messages, Young is said to have threatened Sophy by stating he would need to be compensated and that he had made a mistake by targeting the wrong person.
Sophy said in the filing that once, early on, he attempted to defuse the situation by replying calmly that although he wasn’t sure what Young was referring to, he would gladly schedule a time to discuss the matter. But, according to the court document, the “What’s the Difference” rapper only “doubled down, further threatening [Sophy].”
With each new message arriving, Sophy felt an increasing sense of unease, for she was fully aware that Young’s past, marked by well-established instances of violence and abuse, combined with his prominence, made it plausible that he might carry out any perceived threat. This could potentially result in physical harm, violence, or even death towards Dr. Sophy. It is important to note that Young had been embroiled in controversy when the 2015 N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” failed to fully address his previous violent history against women.
At one point, the warnings Young made turned out to be true, as he reportedly convinced some of his companions to pose as FBI agents in an attempt to illegally enter Sophy’s home within a secured neighborhood, according to the lawsuit. Consequently, the former head of the Department of Children and Family Services was compelled to take drastic safety precautions such as installing security cameras, hiring private protection, and wearing bulletproof vests. The lawsuit stated that he has since felt compelled to initiate legal action.
Sophy has filed a lawsuit against Young, alleging civil harassment and deliberate causing of mental anguish. She’s requested a trial by jury. The lawsuit asks for $10 million in both actual and compensatory damages, with additional exemplary and punitive damages to be determined during the trial.
