The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has a (mostly) new writing team for season 3

As a long-time fanatic of Middle Earth and all things Tolkien, I must say that the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power left me with a mix of emotions. While it was far from perfect, the action-packed climaxes and Sauron’s intriguing development kept me hooked.

The final episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video aired recently, and although the series had its ups and downs, and occasionally strayed from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original works, it was generally enjoyable. The creators haven’t officially announced a third season yet, but judging by the showrunners’ plans and the enthusiasm of the cast and crew, there seems to be a strong possibility that we’ll see more of Middle-earth in the future.

Indeed, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Payne and McKay have already set up a writers’ team for season 3. This paves the way for further developments, with contributors such as Justin Doble, Ben Tagoe, Ava Wong Davies, Constance Cheng, Jonathan Wilson, Griff Jones, and Sarah Anson involved in the project.

It’s worth noting that, aside from Doble (and Payne and McKay who usually work together on episodes), this room doesn’t have any writers who penned earlier episodes of The Rings of Power. Throughout the first two seasons, authors like Gennifer Hutchison, Jason Cahill, Stephany Folsom, Nicholas Adams, Helen Shang, Glenise Mullins, and another Nicholas Adams contributed scripts. However, it appears none of them are returning to guide the direction of season 3, unlike the transition from season 1 to 2 where Hutchison, Cahill, and Doble remained involved.

Moving forward with the show, significant changes might not be imminent since the showrunners are continuing in their roles as the primary creative forces behind the TV series. Payne and McKay may bring new ideas to the table, leading to some adjustments, but don’t expect any major overhauls. It’s also possible that there could be more routine changes like cycling in new writers due to contractual obligations rather than anything dramatic.

Regardless, you won’t catch the third season of “The Rings of Power” for a while; it’s not due until at least 2026. In the interim, everyone is eagerly anticipating what’s next, even Charlie Vickers (Sauron) himself: he can hardly wait!

Charlie Vickers shares his hopes for Sauron’s journey on The Rings of Power

One point that many viewers could concur on is that Sauron stood out as a notable aspect of the second season of “The Rings of Power”. Vickers discussed with THR what he’s excited about, including some significant incidents from “Lord of the Rings” folklore.

I don’t know anything about the season ahead, or what their plans to announce anything formally are… But as a fan and as someone involved in the show, there are things that I would love to see if we get the chance to do them. The War of the Elves and Sauron, the Fall of Númenor, the War of the Last Alliance, all these things. The forging of the actual ring, what all these amazing novels are borne out of. So this is the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much I’m looking forward to, but I feel like when I watched episode seven and eight, I was thinking: “Is this what the show is now, full throttle from here on?” And that’s a really exciting prospect.

The show, “The Rings of Power,” appears to shine brightest during intense action sequences or climactic moments, so it seems appropriate to ramp up the pace. Vickers added that Sauron is now fully engulfed by darkness but still requires control over Middle-earth as a whole. This marks the beginning of his conquest, and he must take over various regions of Middle-earth, such as Númenóreans, elves, and so on. He has a deep-seated dislike for elves, which may guide his initial strategies. (Laughs.) Given this, it’s likely that he will target the elves first. Additionally, Sauron possesses nine rings recently acquired from Galadriel. I believe his immediate task would be to decide whom to bestow these nine rings upon in order to enslave them, as he has a long list of objectives to accomplish.

If you’re finding it tough to endure the anticipation for season 3 of “The Rings of Power“, there’s a fresh animated movie based on “The Lord of the Rings” called “The War of the Rohirrim” set to release in December.
