As a passionate admirer of Sally Field, I find her bravery and honesty truly inspiring. Her heart-wrenching story about her illegal abortion at 17 is a stark reminder of the struggles women faced in the past, especially when it comes to reproductive rights.

Sally Field publicly disclosed poignant accounts of an unlawful abortion she underwent in Mexico at the age of seventeen.

On Sunday, the actress, aged 77, who supported Vice President Kamala Harris during her presidential campaign in September, shared a deeply disturbing account of an incident on her Instagram post.

In a heartfelt video, the actress who played Mrs. Doubtfire expressed, ‘I continue to carry a deep sense of shame about this, as my upbringing was in the 1950s, and those values have been deeply engrained within me.’

In the caption of the clip, she explained, ‘I’ve been so hesitant to do this, to tell my horrific story. It was during a time even worse than now. A time when contraception was not readily available and only if you were married.

However, I firmly believe that numerous women in my generation have faced comparable hardships, and their resilience gives me strength. It seems to me that, much like myself, they wish to advocate for their grandchildren and every young woman across our nation.

As she went on speaking, Field shared that during that period, she found herself with limited options in life. She had minimal family assistance and financial resources. Despite graduating from high school, no one suggested the idea of higher education to her – neither a college education nor any other plan for her future. She was clueless about her own path ahead.

The Hollywood veteran added, ‘And then I found out I was pregnant.’

She mentioned that she had a family doctor who was also a close relative, and they all traveled together in their shiny new Cadillac to Tijuana. This included her, his spouse, and her mother.

Further describing the situation, she mentioned, ‘We pulled over on a rather rundown street. It gave me chills, and he parked roughly three city blocks distant, pointing out, “Look at that structure over yonder?”‘

As a die-hard admirer, he handed me an envelope filled with money, instructing me to stride towards that structure and surrender the money to them. Upon completion of this task, I was to make a swift return to him immediately.

Sally characterized the abortion, carried out prior to the repeal of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, as ‘deeply disturbing and profoundly impactful.’

The procedure was performed with ‘no anesthetic’ but she said, ‘There was a technician giving me a few puffs of ether but he would then take it away, so it just made my arms and legs feel numb weird, but I felt everything — how much pain I was in.’

In a disturbing turn of events, Field revealed, ‘I discovered that the technician was inappropriately touching me. I found myself struggling to find a way to push him away, which only deepened my sense of humiliation. To make matters even worse, when it was over, they urgently told me to leave – as if the building were on fire. It seemed they didn’t want me there, given the illegality of the situation.’

Field acknowledged the family doctor for his selfless and courageous actions in assisting her. She clarified that he risked losing his medical license if it became known.

In her post, she mentioned that one key factor behind our backing for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz is their stance on reproductive rights.

She urged, ‘Everyone, please, pay attention to this election, up and down the ballot, in every state – especially those with ballot initiatives that could protect reproductive freedom. PLEASE. WE CAN’T GO BACK!!’

In conclusion, she wrote, ‘So here is my story. I’d be honored if you’d tell me yours, if you can.’

Weeks ago, the field re-entered social media as Harris, aged 59, formally received the 2024 presidential nomination during the Democratic National Convention.

At that moment, she posted online, ‘I’ve stayed away from social media. It turned into a soap box for our disgraced ex-president. However, hope seems to be resurfacing. Therefore, here I am. This is my reappearance.’

In a follow-up post, she continued to encourage her followers to get involved in the election.

The essence of hope is present in this very room, shared among me and my newly registered 18-year-old grandson who has just exercised his voting rights. I’m shouting it out from the tallest peak I can find: Vote for our nation, for our kids and their future generations. Vote for the planet, for equality, and human rights. Vote for democracy. Vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Please God, let this be heard.
