Madonna breaks silence over brother Christopher Ciccone's death at 63 with heartbreaking tribute: 'He was the closest human to me for so long'

As a dedicated follower of Madonna’s journey through life and music, I can’t help but be moved by her heartfelt tribute to her late brother Christopher Ciccone. Her words paint a vivid picture of their bond, forged in dance, art, and defiance against societal norms.

After the passing of her brother Christopher Ciccone at the age of 63, Madonna finally spoke up, posting a poignant tribute to express her grief.

I, utterly smitten, recently took to my Instagram, sharing a heartfelt tribute – a series of captivating snapshots – showcasing the unforgettable moments I shared with the legendary singer, now 66, and his companion, Christopher, who bravely fought cancer. Alas, he was taken from us.

My sibling, Chris, is no longer with me. For such a long time, he was like an integral part of me. It’s challenging to articulate our connection, but it blossomed from a shared awareness that we didn’t fit comfortably within societal norms and would face challenges for not conforming to the standard way of life.

We intertwined our hands and danced our way through the chaos of our youthful years. Dancing, in essence, served as a strong bonding agent that kept us connected.

In our humble Midwestern community, learning dance became my rescue, and the same happened to my sibling. Our ballet instructor, another Christopher, fashioned an accepting haven for my brother, a truth about his identity that was rarely acknowledged in the place we called home – he found safety in being openly gay there.

She continued: ‘Once I mustered the bravery to journey to New York with dreams of dancing, my brother joined me. Hand in hand, we danced our way through the chaos of New York City.’

We consumed art, music, and film with an insatiable appetite, right at the heart where they seemed to be bursting forth.

‘We danced through the madness of the AIDS epidemic,’ the lengthy tribute continued.

“We attended funerals where we wept, and later went dancing. Initially, we danced on stage during the early stages of my career, and eventually, he took on the role as my Creative Director for numerous tours. In terms of good taste, my brother was like the Pope, and you needed his approval to gain his blessing.

We boldly challenged the Roman Catholic Church, law enforcement, the Moral Majority, and any other figures of power who impeded artistic expression!

‘Next to me stood my brother, a multitalented individual. He was not only a skilled painter and poet but also a visionary. I held him in high esteem. His discerning eye for aesthetics was unmatched, and his wit, though it occasionally targeted me, was something I could easily forgive.’

Together, we reached our greatest peaks and plunged into our deepest valleys. Yet, miraculously, we’d always reconnect. Hand in hand, we continued to dance.

Over the past few years, things haven’t been a breeze. We fell out of touch for some time, but when my brother became ill, we managed to reconnect again.

I made every effort to prolong his life for as long as I could, given his immense suffering near the end. One more time, we intertwined our fingers, shut our eyes, and moved in unison.

“It’s comforting that he’s no longer in pain. No one will ever match his unique qualities. I believe he’s dancing somewhere now.
