Things aren’t looking good for Joker: Folie A Deux (box office update)

Things aren't looking good for Joker: Folie A Deux (box office update)

As a gamer who’s been through countless movie releases and their subsequent hype cycles, I can’t help but feel a tinge of deja vu when it comes to the latest blockbuster sensation: Joker 2, or as some call it, Folie à Deux. Having eagerly awaited its release, I was ready to embrace the chaos that Todd Phillips promised once again with Joaquin Phoenix and the enigmatic Lady Gaga joining forces.

It’s quite likely that if you had asked people earlier in the year which movie they were most excited about for the year, a significant number of responses might have been “Joker: Folie à Deux” (also known as “Joker 2”). This film is the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 Academy Award-nominated movie, and both Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix are back for this project that was once thought doubtful. Intriguingly, they have also enlisted Lady Gaga for the role of Harley Quinn in this production. So, one might wonder what potential issues could arise?

Excitement grew just a couple of months back when the initial trailer dropped, suggesting a film that could be labeled an exhilarating journey, one that some might term as cinematic. Despite some early responses to the movie being varied, overall they leaned towards the positive, commending the acting and visual aspects.

Currently, the film is being screened globally, and the responses, it appears, vary quite a bit. This diversity in opinions might influence things significantly.

Joker 2’s negative response might impact its box office takings

The much-anticipated film “Joker: Folie à Deux” hits theaters this weekend, sparking a wide range of opinions among viewers – including both fans and critics. While some DC fans are displeased with the movie’s musical aspects (a hurdle they were always likely to face), criticism extends beyond these elements. Some audience members have issues with the storyline, others believe Lady Gaga isn’t given enough screen time, while many feel it fails to match up to its original.

The largely unfavorable reviews have affected its Rotten Tomatoes rating, causing it to plummet from a “fresh” 62% score to a staggering 36%. While movies are ultimately decided by the audience, this low score doesn’t bode well for the upcoming Joker 2, since it currently has an equally dismal 36% audience rating. The worry now is that this response may impact its earnings at the box office.

The follow-up was initially predicted to have a substantial opening weekend, and it appears that will hold true, yet anticipation has decreased somewhat. This adjustment in expectations is due to audience responses and Thursday night box office earnings, which totaled $7 million overnight – a decrease from the 2019 original’s $13 million. However, despite this lower start, the film is expected to rule the box office for the weekend. But as Variety notes, there are higher risks involved in this sequel compared to the first time around.

In 2019, the movie “Joker” earned a staggering lifetime gross of $1.03 billion on a relatively small budget of only $65 million. Even if it had only made half that amount, it would still have been a massive hit. Conversely, the upcoming film “Folie à Deux” boasts a budget of $200 million, so in order to turn a profit, it will need to come close to matching its predecessor’s success at the box office.

This upcoming movie is predicted to have substantial earnings (and it’s likely to be among the top films of the year), yet it appears that it won’t achieve the extraordinary triumph Warner Bros. and DC Studios had envisioned. Unlike Joker in 2019, which had nothing to lose and ended up gaining a lot due to its unexpected success, this film seems to have everything to lose and nothing to gain if it fails to meet expectations.

As I eagerly await the release of “Joker 2”, Deadline’s update has got me thinking about the tight race we’re seeing between its Thursday night previews and Marvel Studios’ “The Marvels”. The interesting twist? “The Marvels” was one of the biggest box office flops in history. Fingers crossed that “Joker 2” avoids a similar fate, but it just goes to show how unpredictable the box office can be. Here’s hoping for a successful run for the DC flick!
