Ronan gives a commanding performance in ‘The Outrun’

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating through virtual worlds and overcoming challenges, I can say that watching “The Outrun” felt like embarking on a real-life quest. The film is a gripping portrayal of Rona’s journey, a journey that mirrors the struggle many of us face in our own lives – battling demons, finding our way home, and healing.

Returning home can be tough, especially when you’re grappling with personal struggles. This is one of the captivating aspects of “The Outrun“, a movie debuting on Friday, October 4.

Director Nora Fingsheidt collaborated with Amy Liptrot in adapting the film. It’s inspired by Liptrot’s 2016 memoir bearing the same title, which documented her return home after a spell in rehab. The book detailed a tumultuous decade in London that led to her struggles with addiction and seeking help, followed by her journey back home and recovery process.

The movie traces a familiar theme. Rona (played by Saoirse Ronan), after completing a 90-day program, goes back to her family house on the Orkney Island, located off the Scottish coast. She’s been through hardships and her healing process is just starting. Home offers her respite at times, but also serves as a reminder that she doesn’t quite belong.

In that setting, she finds herself confronting the consequences of her mother revealing her tale to numerous townsfolk, as well as her father (Stephen Dillane), who has been fighting his own internal struggles due to mental illness. Meanwhile, she strives to embrace the new environment, combat her desires, organize her thoughts, and immerse herself in nature and the world that surrounds her.

I found the movie’s structure quite appealing. It skillfully contrasted her current circumstances with recollections from the past, particularly her decade-long stint in London. The narrative showcases her lifestyle of socializing extensively and the impact it had on both her personal and professional ties. Ultimately, it portrays the series of incidents that led to her decision to seek assistance.

An intriguing method involves the narration by Rona, offering insights about nature, society, and her hometown’s history. This captivating and imaginative approach provides a unique angle for exploring this non-linear narrative, which aims to illustrate the long, at times challenging, journey towards recovery from addiction.

Ronan delivers a captivating and passionate portrayal. She significantly contributes to the movie, pouring her heart into challenging plotlines and scenes. Her performance is utterly gripping, making it hard for viewers to look away during this emotional rollercoaster.

The second half of the movie has some striking scenes. The breathtaking cinematography that showcases Orkney Island is captivating. While the narrative isn’t always seamless, which gives an uneven feel to the film in parts, it’s Ronan’s performance that truly shines. Her acting skills place her high on the list of contenders for this award season.

The Outrun opens nationwide on Friday, October 4.
