Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Review – A Short-Lived, Overpriced Piece of DLC That Still Offers a Few Hours of Brutal Fun
As a lifelong fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise, I’ve seen my fair share of battles and story twists that would make even the most hardened warrior cringe. But let me tell you, dear readers, the latest expansion for MK1, titled “Khaos Reigns,” has taken the cake!
In no time at all, Fire God Liu Kang’s tranquil ‘New Era’ was shattered, wasn’t it? Bi-Han, also known as Sub-Zero, is plotting to disrupt Scorpion’s wedding, with his Lin Kuei students, Cyrax and Sektor, squabbling like unruly children. On the other hand, Titan Havik emerged through a gigantic portal, with ambitions to dominate all timelines and create utter chaos, or as they say, ‘Khaos’. This introduces us to the Khaos Reigns expansion in Mortal Kombat 1, which includes five extra story chapters. Here, you’ll need to repel yet another danger threatening the timeline.
In these latest story chapters, battles are the order of the day as you face off against Havik’s team of peculiar characters from alternate timelines – a group reminiscent of Havik’s own roster. These alternative versions can be earned as extra skins to use across the game. For example, Mileena and Kitana sport mohawks in their signature colors, Kenshi sports one too, Takeda has a kind-of mohawk, and so on. The action is dramatic, and while it’s generally serious, there are occasional jokes, mainly from the two Johnny Cages that appear.
Here, you won’t find these newcomers, Cyrax and Sektor, lacking in fun as they take on the roles of Lin Kuei ninjas with less technological armor. However, their movesets remain faithful to their original selves. As for Noob Saibot, he undergoes a transformation into one of Havik’s evil minions, driven by his master to cause havoc mindlessly. The three new characters are exciting additions, but remember there are yet three more guest characters to be introduced.
Nonetheless, we’re not entirely convinced that Khaos Reigns warrants its somewhat exorbitant $50/£40 price tag. Five rather short-lived chapters and three characters doesn’t exactly scream value, and even when you factor in the bonus character skins and the coming of Ghostface from the Scream movies, the liquid metal T-1000 Terminator from T2: Judgment Day, and Conan the Barbarian from… Conan the Barbarian, that outlay still seems too high. It doesn’t even add any new achievements. Booooooo!
In terms of additional Mortal Kombat 1 content, Khaos Reigns delivers as expected, albeit with narrative additions that feel somewhat unnecessary. The new characters and skins may not justify the DLC’s price, but if you’re yearning for reasons to re-engage, it offers enticing freebies such as gruesome new Animality finishers for all characters, a fresh Invasions season, four new arenas, and the comeback of Towers of Time mode. If these aren’t enough to satisfy you, Khaos Reigns should suffice, offering some hours of playtime. However, it might be wise to hold out for a sale before diving in.
