As a long-time fan of all things spooky and sweet, I must say that this week’s episode of Halloween Wars left me absolutely spellbound! The creativity, precision, and sheer nerve it took to bring these Nightmare on Elm Street-themed masterpieces to life was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
In the second week of season 14, the six surviving teams are battling it out to win the ultimate prize. For this round, the theme revolves around “Nightmare on Elm Street” as a tribute to the movie’s 40th anniversary celebration.
Due to this significant event, each team is granted seven hours to design a terrifyingly impressive pumpkin, sugar, and cake creation, themed around a “dreadful dream manifested.” To make the experience more cinematic, teams must incorporate some spectacular visual effects. The sweet treats they craft will be determined by their assigned “horror” flavor, such as garlic and seaweed, which they’ll need to cleverly incorporate into something appetizing.
- Delectable Demons, Black Licorice – Anna is terrified of the tooth fairy, as she should be as this nightmare creation involves a creature called the “tooth collector;” they made a white chocolate tooth with a licorice brownie inside
- 2 Ghouls and a Butcher, Garlic – Carl goes to town on an all-you-can-eat donut buffet and then gets abducted by aliens who gladly open him up to feast on the pastries; for their treat, they created a sweet chili mango donut
- Shriek Squad, Fermented Plums – Farmer John steps into his barn to find a terrifying monster inside; they paired their fermented plums with dates inside mini baklava-inspired cheesecakes
- Scream of the Crop, Ketchup – Meet Freuger’s long-lost relative, Frida Frostbite; in honor of their frigid display, they crafted finger-shaped treats featuring toasted honey and ketchup marshmallow with sweet tomato jam
- Killer Instincts, Seaweed – A man tries carving a serpent into his pumpkin, only for the serpent to come to life and attack; brioche tarts with a seaweed crumble are served alongside it
- Death by Deco, Olives – Emily draws a raven and that night it comes to life in her bedroom; their dessert is a shortbread cookie with sweet mascarpone, figs, and olives
The winner of the challenge is Scream of the Crop. The judges were very impressed with Frida’s display as well as the pleasant taste of their treat.
Although Shriek Squad emerged victorious the previous week, their performance with the farmer John theme was deemed messy and uncontrolled by the judges, resulting in them being in the bottom two. However, it is Killer Instincts who are eliminated this week as their special effect malfunctioned and they did not incorporate much seaweed in their dessert.
Fresh installments of “Halloween Wars” can be viewed every Sunday evening on the Food Network, and they’re also available for streaming on Max and Discovery+.
