Kate Mulgrew doesn’t know if a live-action Janeway can be recaptured
As a dedicated Star Trek: Voyager fan with over two decades of fervent admiration for the indomitable Captain Janeway, I wholeheartedly echo the clamor for Kate Mulgrew‘s return to live-action. Her portrayal of Janeway was not just a performance; it was an embodiment that resonated deeply with viewers and left an enduring impact on the sci-fi genre.
Fans of Star Trek: Voyager have been clamoring for a live-action series featuring Admiral Janeway since the debut of Star Trek: Prodigy, and their demands have only grown louder. After seven highly successful seasons on Voyager, Kate Mulgrew reprises her role as Admiral Janeway in Prodigy’s second season. The demand for more of this beloved character remains strong. This is due to Captain Janeway being one of Starfleet’s finest captains, and Mulgrew herself being a truly exceptional individual.
When asked about coming back to live action at the San Diego Comic-Con, she expressed that if she were to return, it would need to be something fresh, genuine, and executed flawlessly. In other words, a new, authentic, and impeccable experience.
As I scroll through TikTok, a clip from @onlythejaneway catches my eye, featuring none other than Patrick Stewart’s show, Star Trek: Picard. She didn’t explain why she brought it up exactly, but she did hint that he was an exceptional captain with a voice to die for. Could it be a subtle nod to the fact that great captains can indeed make a comeback?
It’s prudent for Kate Mulgrew not to rush into a live-action Star Trek: Voyager series without a well-defined plan, as she portrayed Captain Janeway for seven years and then two more as an admiral. The character of Janewaray was deeply resonant with fans, making it challenging to find someone who can fill her shoes effectively. However, the return of Janeway should serve a purpose beyond simply commanding another mission. A simple reboot or remake wouldn’t suffice; instead, there must be a compelling reason for Janeway’s comeback that would be both dramatic and thought-provoking, almost like a film. Whether it materializes on a streaming platform or the big screen, we’d welcome her return with open arms.
