Marvel fans think they know what Thunderbolts’ asterisk means

As a die-hard Marvel fan who has followed the MCU since its inception, I must say that the asterisk in Thunderbolts* is causing quite the buzz among us fans! The comics have always been a rich source of inspiration for the movies, and the secrecy surrounding this asterisk has me intrigued.

Marvel fans seem to think they know the meaning behind Thunderbolts‘ asterisk.

Drawing inspiration from its comic book source material, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster narrates the tale of an assemblage of anti-heroes, united for a perilous assignment by government operative Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

The movie officially goes by the name “Thunderbolts“, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has chosen to keep the title’s significance a secret until after the movie premieres next year.

Meanwhile, I’ve joined countless fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts expressing our speculations about that enigmatic asterisk on various social platforms.

On Monday (September 23), an observant spectator posted on Reddit, suggesting that the asterisk might reveal a new group of Avengers.

They proposed a guessing game about the mystery that the asterisks conceal. Here are their suggestions: “The New Avengers”, “The Dark Avengers”, and “The Secret Avengers”.

Based on the hints given in the first trailer for the movie, such as Val buying Avengers Tower, the statement “Be Careful Who You Assemble,” and Marvel being intentionally vague about certain aspects (asterisks), it seems almost certain that one of the possible plotlines will be revealed.

If it shows something other than a variant of the Avengers, I’d be left speechless. At the moment, my guess is leaning towards ‘New Avengers’, but I can equally imagine the other two options as well.

Another fan took to X (formerly Twitter) to explain that the asterisk could signify a “trap” for the anti-heroes, as opposed to working as a team.

The implication seems to be that the asterisk in the title signifies Ross constructed the items as a trap rather than a team effort, and that’s quite clever if that’s indeed the case, according to the post.

Some people think that the asterisk may hint that the movie isn’t strictly about the Thunderbolts, but rather an adaptation of the Dark Avengers storyline with a dark and ominous tone, much like the comic series. We’ll have to wait and see.

The speculation arises following David Harbour’s recent disclosure about when he found out about the asterisk, as he portrays Alexei Shostakov in the movie.

In his conversation with Comic Book, he explained that the asterisk was added later on. It appears to have been a concept that originated from someone’s mind.

“I don’t want to step on any toes, but let me tell you, that asterisk is quite impressive! It’s easy to understand why someone would use it in this context. I’m eager for everyone to notice it too. However, I can’t reveal more at the moment.

I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming movie, Thunderbolts, is being steered by director Jake Schreier, who previously brought us the charming film “Paper Towns”. The screenplay for this exciting project is a collaboration between Eric Pearson, known for his work on “Black Widow”, Lee Sung Jin, creator of “Beef”, and Joanna Calo, from the critically acclaimed series “The Bear”. It’s shaping up to be something truly spectacular!

The distinguished ensemble features the likes of Florence Pugh, Geraldine Viswanathan, Lewis Pullman, Harrison Ford, Sebastian Stan, Ayo Edebiri, Rachel Weisz, and Laurence Fishburne.

Thunderbolts* is released in cinemas on May 2, 2025.
