Hong Kong officials announced a new regulation that requires people to unlock their phones and computers if requested during national security investigations. Not following this rule could result in criminal charges.
The rules also let police take and keep devices they believe are connected to investigations, even at places like airports and border crossings.
While recent social media posts suggest this is a recent development, these authorities actually come from the National Security Law passed in 2020. Nevertheless, the increased focus on this is causing worry throughout the cryptocurrency world.

The government amended the rules surrounding the National Security Law, and now, refusing to provide passwords or help decrypt personal electronic devices to the Hong Kong police is considered a crime. This essentially means authorities can compel individuals to unlock their phones, computers, and other devices.

People who own Bitcoin have a unique risk: if they keep their wallet information – like private keys or access codes – on their own computers or phones, authorities could potentially force them to hand it over. This could give someone else complete control of their Bitcoin.
Because of these concerns, people who use and secure cryptocurrency are advising against bringing private wallet information with you when traveling to Hong Kong.
This law has a wide reach, covering both foreign visitors and people just passing through, and the term “national security” isn’t clearly defined.
This expands the potential risks beyond just politically sensitive situations. Anyone involved in crypto – from traders and company founders to everyday investors using self-custody wallets – could be impacted if their devices are checked.
