Now is not the time for Jey Uso to challenge for the Intercontinental Championship

As someone who’s been a WWE fan since the days of Hulkamania and Macho Man, I can’t help but feel that the Intercontinental Championship tournament has a golden opportunity to shine with a fresh face. While Jey Uso is undeniably popular and has a loyal fanbase, I believe it’s time for Ilja Dragunov to step into the limelight.

Over the last few weeks on RAW, there has been a tournament leading up to a match where the victor will get a title shot against Bron Breakker for the Intercontinental Championship. Even though the final bout happens during the Season Premiere of RAW, WWE still has opportunities to choose who should be the next challenger. The fatal four-way contest includes Ilja Dragnunov, Braun Strowman, Pete Dunne, and the crowd’s favorite, Jey Uso. Although it seems likely that Uso will face Breakker, I think WWE should consider a different option. Instead of Jey Uso, perhaps Ilja Dragunov could be next in line for the opportunity.

Ilja still has some outstanding matters with Breakker since he’s been fighting to defeat him throughout the summer. However, it’s worth noting that Jey is currently favored by the fans, but there’s a chance he might lose in the storyline. Last week, Jey found himself tangled up in The Judgment Day’s affairs, which could lead to some serious repercussions. One potential consequence is that Dominik Mysterio could take away Jey’s chance at gold for helping his former girlfriend, Rhea Ripley. All things considered, Ilja stands a better chance of winning the four-way match in a fair manner compared to Jey. This victory would help him make up for some past losses, such as the King of the Ring tournament and his defeat against Breakker.

If Jey manages to emerge victorious, there’s a risk he might face another disappointing loss in the quest for singles gold, given that he claimed the Intercontinental Championship last month at SummerSlam. As such, it seems improbable that Breakker will relinquish his title soon. To ensure Jey’s credibility as a formidable opponent, WWE should consider giving him more attention by resolving his ongoing feud with The Judgment Day first. This would set the stage for an engaging match between Breakker and Jey at a major event like Crown Jewel, where Jey could make history by claiming his inaugural singles championship in front of a massive audience. In the interim, WWE can strengthen Breakker’s status as a serious champion by having him secure another successful title defense against Ilja before eventually facing off with Jey. The historical significance of this match lies in the fact that no member of Jey’s family has ever bested any of Breakker’s relatives in singles competition.
