‘Type of Way’ Rapper Rich Homie Quan Has Died at Age 33

As a critic who has spent decades immersed in the rich tapestry of hip-hop, it is with a heavy heart that I pen this tribute to Rich Homie Quan. A titan of the trap scene, his indelible impact on the genre will continue to reverberate long after his untimely departure at just 33 years old.

Atlanta-based rap artist Rich Homie Quan, known for his trap hits “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” passed away at the age of 33.

It’s been confirmed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner that Dequantes Devontay Lamar, also known as Quan, passed away at a hospital in Atlanta. Jimmy Sadler, a senior medical examiner investigator, informed The Associated Press of this on Thursday. The exact cause of his death is yet to be determined, with an autopsy set for Friday.

In the mid-2010s, Quan was one of the most prominent figures in hip-hop music. Prior to achieving mainstream success in 2013 with the catchy “Type of Way,” he had already released a number of mixtapes. The song gained so much popularity that Jeezy and Meek Mill were among those who jumped on a remix version. Quan continued his rise, collaborating with YG and Jeezy on a track and releasing the London on da Track-produced “Lifestyle” through his Rich Gang collective which included Young Thug and Birdman.

Quan referenced “Flex (Oh, Oh, Oh),” a track produced by DJ Spinz and Nitti Beatz, which turned out to be his highest-ranking solo single, peaking at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, he collaborated with Lil Dicky on the viral hit “$ave Dat Money.”

2018 marked the release of Quan’s inaugural and sole studio album titled “Rich as in Spirit“. The majority of this album was solo, however it did include “Think About It”, a track featuring Rick Ross.

On social media, Quavo, Lil Boosie, and Playboi Carti were among those who honored Quan with heartfelt tributes.

“Singer Jacquees expressed his condolences by saying, ‘May you find eternal peace, my brother Rich Homie Quan.’ He further honored him as a ‘legend,’ adding, ‘I’ll always cherish your life.'”

In 2022, Quan had a conversation with the Associated Press regarding his plans to get back into music following a sudden break. During that time, he mentioned that he was embroiled in legal issues with the independent label T.I.G. (Think It’s a Game Record), but was eager to make a return to the scene.

At that point, Quan found himself embroiled in a dispute with his former partner, Young Thug. This partnership, along with rapper Gunna, was among a group facing charges for alleged conspiracy to breach Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. They were also accused of involvement in a criminal street gang.

Quan expressed that he had no issues with Young Thug and would be willing to talk to him if given the chance. He shared his dislike for seeing Young Thug behind bars, emphasizing that many rappers are facing scrutiny from law enforcement.

“He mentioned that while it might not be entirely unjust, considering some rappers include guns in their music videos, it’s important to remember this ties back to the influence of social media.”

He believes we’re revealing too much, and he thinks they are doing the same. In other words, there’s a significant difference in his music; he plans to narrate a story, but won’t disclose the methods used. He continued by saying, “It’s still Black art, but we’re definitely being singled out. That’s why I’m cautious about what I express in my songs.”
