Can we expect a Spock/Uhura romance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?
As a seasoned gamer of all things Star Trek, I find myself eagerly anticipating the unfolding romantic saga of Spock in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Having navigated countless galaxies and starships through the years, I’ve grown accustomed to the emotional complexities that interstellar travel can bring.
In a new and unprecedented direction, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds delves into territories unexplored by any other series, focusing on Spock [Ethan Peck]. The deep-seated affection between Nurse Christine Chapel [Majel Barrett Roddenberry] from the original Star Trek series and Leonard Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock was subtly touched upon in Strange New Worlds. Despite parting ways when Jess Bush’s character, Chapel, prioritized her career over their relationship, their bond remains significant.
Initially, it’s worth noting that Spock had an unfolding romantic relationship and became engaged to T’Pring (Gia Sandhu), a connection not delved into in The Original Series. Interestingly, they hadn’t crossed paths since their childhood days. However, in Strange New Worlds, the storyline took a different turn and depicted them as already romantically involved at the start, which didn’t endure long-term.
As a devoted fan, I can’t forget to mention that on The Original Series, there was another potential love interest for Spock, none other than Lt. Uhura, played by the remarkable Nichelle Nichols. Although their relationship didn’t blossom into romance in the original series, the chemistry between them was palpable. In J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin Timeline movies, this connection was delved into more deeply, experiencing various trials before ultimately parting ways in Star Trek: Beyond. However, their bond proved strong, leading them to reunite and rekindle their relationship in the same movie.
With Cillian O’Sullivan joining Strange New Worlds for the role of Roger Korby in season three, it seems that the series might delve deeper into his relationship with Nurse Chapel, potentially lessening the focus on Spock. This could potentially create new opportunities for the dynamic between Spock and Uhura instead.
Up until now, it appears there’s no romantic tension between Uhura and Spock in this adaptation of Star Trek, as Uhura is relatively new to her role as a Starfleet officer. Given Spock’s higher rank, potential complications could arise, yet their relationship, as portrayed by Zachary Quinto’s Spock and Zoe Saldana’s Uhura in the Chris Pine films, seems to have worked despite some skepticism from fans.
If Strange New Worlds decides against developing Spock’s romantic storyline, it would be great if they pair him up with someone before he turns into the solitary character we know from The Original Series. He still has ample time to embody the stoic Vulcan on that Enterprise. At this moment, he could benefit from the affection of a person who won’t cause him heartbreak.
