As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher of true crime series, I can’t help but feel intrigued by Netflix’s latest offering – “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” Having delved into the dark alleys of Dahmer’s mind, I find myself drawn to another real-life tale that has captivated audiences for decades.
It wasn’t surprising that Netflix decided to renew Ryan Murphy’s biographical true crime series, “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” for two more seasons due to its unprecedented success. Although it faced mixed opinions and dealt with sensitive topics, the show has become one of Netflix’s most-viewed original series ever, earning numerous accolades, such as an Emmy for lead actress Niecy Nash.
Currently, the streamer aims to duplicate that achievement with a new installment of the series, delving into the intricate tale of Lyle and Erik Menendez – the brothers who were convicted in 1996 for murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. At present, in reality, both Erik and Lyle are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole at the California state prison Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility.
However, the series titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” intends to re-evaluate a case that some believe the courts may have misjudged. Originally, the prosecution maintained that the brothers were motivated by a desire to claim the family wealth, but Lyle and Erik have consistently asserted that their parents’ abuse, which spanned over years, was the true impetus for the murders they committed.
‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?
Beginning this coming Thursday, September 19th at midnight Pacific Time / 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time, the eight-episode series will make its debut, releasing all episodes simultaneously. The series stars Javier Bardem as José, with Chloë Sevigny taking on the role of his screen wife Kitty. Nicholas Chavez, known for “Grotesquerie,” and Cooper Koch from “They/Them” portray Lyle and Erik respectively. Additionally, Nathan Lane and Ari Graynor will appear as Dominick Dunne and Leslie Abramson in the series.
Besides the main actors, we also have Leslie Grossman, Paul Adelstein, Jeff Perry, Marlene Forte, Charlie Hall, Dallas Roberts, Jason Butler Horner, Enrique Murciano, Michael Gladis, and others joining the production.
