Star Trek should continue the Original Series concept with the Strange New World crew
As a seasoned Trekkie with memories of watching the original Star Trek series etched deep into my life’s tapestry, I must say that the prospect of continuing the story with the Strange New Worlds cast is nothing short of exhilarating.
Star Trek: The Original Series had numerous unresolved storylines because the creators initially planned a five-season run. The series’ premise centered around the U.S.S. Enterprise embarking on a five-year space exploration mission. However, the show only lasted for three seasons, concluding the mission prematurely, about a year before it was supposed to end according to the original plan.
The decision to cancel the series after its potential second season may have prompted Gene Roddenberry to wrap up the narrative earlier than planned. He accelerated the timeline from the end of the third year, right after the second season, all the way to the end of the fourth year for the revival third season. There’s still much more to delve into regarding this storyline. Although The Animated Series attempted to continue the tale, there remains uncertainty and disagreement about which parts truly align with the show’s established lore.
Revisiting an updated edition of the initial show could potentially rectify those issues. Moreover, such a reboot would provide both long-term and fresh fans an opportunity to reconnect with and delve deeper into the beloved characters who ignited this phenomenon.
As a passionate gamer, let me share my excitement about the upcoming Star Trek series! So far, we’ve got Paul Wesley as Captain Kirk, Ethan Peck as Spock, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, Jess Bush as Nurse Chapel, and Martin Quinn as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. All that’s left now is finding our Hikaru Sulu, Pavel Chekov, and Leonard “Bones” McCoy to complete the crew! Can’t wait to see what adventures await us!
Of course, there will be resistance to this idea. The original series is legendary, and the actors who breathed life into it are nothing short of extraordinary. It seems impossible to replicate them, yet it’s worth noting that they’ve previously had their characters recast. The Kelvin Timeline film series attempted a similar approach, but with mixed results and numerous problems.
These films are generally enjoyable, although they bear no resemblance to Star Trek whatsoever. However, we’re not discussing a new alternate universe here. Instead, our focus is on wrapping up the story. This might lead to resistance. It’s worth noting that fans have already completed a similar task with the non-canonical series “Star Trek Continues” without causing any major damage to the franchise.
Instead of wrapping up the original story, how about continuing it with the cast from Strange New Worlds? This concept has potential and could certainly attract both long-time and new fans, especially if characters appearing in the new version of the old Star Trek series are first introduced in Strange New Worlds.
Should that occur, it might become a legitimate success. Yet, it’s important to note that the creators of the show might find it challenging to balance their ideas effectively, which could be beyond their abilities.
