The show will conclude after its second season, it was announced this week. This decision comes after the first season received mixed reviews and didn’t attract a large audience on Paramount+.
I was really saddened to hear about the show ending. Gina Yashere, who played Lura Thok, shared a video explaining how she felt – she said she was completely heartbroken, but so thankful for the chance to be a part of Starfleet Academy for two seasons. She’s hoping Star Trek will return someday when the world is ready for the message our show was trying to share.
Season 2 Is “Even Better” Than the First
She said she was very disappointed to learn the show wouldn’t be returning for a third season. “I really thought we created something special,” she explained. “The first season was incredible, and we’d just finished filming the second, which I think is even stronger. We were really building something great, and I honestly believe the first season was one of the best Star Trek has ever done.”
Yashere acknowledged that some people might disagree, but said he wasn’t looking for an argument. He expressed how much it meant to him to work on Star Trek, saying he truly enjoyed playing Lura Thok. He finished by saying he was disappointed fans wouldn’t get to see more of her story or the stories of the other characters they had developed.
She went on to say that the world isn’t quite ready for a message of love, peace, and accepting everyone – a message that rejects violence and pointless wars. She hopes that someday we will be, and that Star Trek will return, even stronger, with that same core message, and without losing its diversity.
Gina Yashere Tells Fans to “Stay Woke”
She wrote in her Instagram post that she’ll leave it to her followers to decide why the project ended. She expressed gratitude for having been involved and acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry. She’s thankful she was able to create the life she wanted by telling genuine stories, something she feels is now becoming increasingly difficult.
She added, “Be safe out there peeps. Stay woke. Wokeywoke. . Wokeyliscious. A cacophony of woke.”
Yashere seems to be responding to criticism that Starfleet Academy is overly focused on progressive values. Some critics feel the show prioritizes things like racial and LGBTQ+ diversity too much, and that it focuses too heavily on current social issues. However, fans of the series point out that Star Trek has always included these kinds of themes, even going back to the original show.
The new series is now available on Paramount+. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has launched and is generating discussion.
