Rachel Zegler battles a killer Tamagotchi in first trailer for new comedy Y2K
As a child of the ’90s, the trailer for Y2K sent my heart racing with nostalgia! The combination of Rachel Zegler, Kyle Mooney, and a Y2K Bug gone wrong is a recipe for a hilarious and action-packed movie. I can’t help but be reminded of those old New Year’s Eve parties where we’d gather around the television, nervously waiting for the world to end… only to find ourselves laughing at the antics of sentient Tamagotchis and devil-stick-wielding stoners.
Actress Rachel Zegler, who starred in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” recently unveiled the debut trailer for her upcoming comedy titled “Y2K.”
Under the guidance of Kyle Mooney, who was previously a cast member at Saturday Night Live, this movie features Zelger, known for Knives Out and It, along with Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison from Deadpool 2. These three youngsters are depicted enjoying New Year’s Eve on December 31, 1999.
The story begins in a common fashion, featuring an awkward guy harboring feelings for a girl who seems to have other interests. However, at the stroke of midnight, the Y2K glitch springs into action.
In contrast to real-life situations that involve minor problems, this movie presents a scenario where technology gains consciousness and turns hostile. Here, we witness an RC car equipped with LEGO limbs employing a flamethrower filled with hairspray against a boastful young man, and a sentient Tamagotchi brutally drilling another character to death.
A figure resembling a character who was once a potential mascot for an early PlayStation era (Polygon Man), seems to mock our protagonists. His appearance suggests that he could potentially be the central antagonist.
In a tough situation where survival seems unlikely, luckily the teenagers have an assist from Mooney’s character – a laid-back guy sporting blonde dreadlocks and skilled in handling devil sticks.
All of the black comedy and visual throwbacks are, of course, topped off with an epic trailer of a ’90s cornerstone smash hit. In this case, it’s the “I get knocked down, but I get up again” song, also known as ‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbawumba.
Apart from Rachel Zegler’s forthcoming movie that unveiled its trailer this month, Disney has also given us a sneak peek at her starring role in their upcoming live-action adaptation of “Snow White,” where she takes on the character famously known as the apple enthusiast.
Y2K will be released in US cinemas on December 6. A UK release date has yet to be confirmed.
