NASCAR has a new points leader after Michigan rainout
As a dedicated NASCAR enthusiast with over two decades of racing passion under my belt, I can confidently say that every point matters, especially when it comes to the nail-biting race for the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series regular season championship. The drama unfolding between Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott has been a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions this summer!
In simpler terms, each point is crucial in the fight for the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series regular season title, as this title awards a bonus of 15 playoff points, equivalent to winning three races, before the start of the four-round, 10-race postseason.
On Sunday afternoon, Kyle Larson, driver for Hendrick Motorsports, held the top spot in points at Michigan International Speedway’s FireKeepers Casino 400. Throughout the warm summer months, he and his teammate Chase Elliott have traded this position multiple times. Both are aiming to secure their second regular season championship titles.
In the year 2021, Larson clinched the victory that led to his initial series championship win, while in the year 2022, Elliott secured the regular season crown, having previously taken home the 2020 series title.
On Sunday, I was right in the middle of a grueling 200-lap race on the 2.0-mile Brooklyn, Michigan oval when, after completing just the first 45 laps and six additional laps during the stage break, the race got halted due to rain. NASCAR decided to delay the remaining 149 laps until Monday.
But factoring in just those stage one results, the NASCAR Cup Series once again has a new points leader.
Elliott ended up coming in second during the race, just behind Ryan Blaney from Team Penske, earning him nine points. Again, he leads the standings, though it’s not yet an official title.
In this NASCAR race, drivers Tyler Reddick (for 33XI Racing), Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing), and another driver within the top four rankings all ended the stage outside of the top ten positions, despite initially running with leader Elliott in the opening laps.
As a gamer navigating through the thrilling Cup Series, here I am, currently holding down the top five spots after the first 23 races and the just-concluded Stage One at Michigan. With only two stages and two races left in the 26-race regular season schedule, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a strong finish!
1 – Chase Elliott in the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet leads with a score of 782 points (no penalties).
Despite Blaney clinching stage one, earning him 10 points plus a bonus playoff point, he managed this achievement without making pit stops during the caution period triggered by Hamlin’s solitary spin on turn four.
During the stage pause, he pulled over for a brief rest, whereas Elliott, having pitted during the Hamlin warning, remained on track until a red flag signaled that everyone needed to head to the pit lane.
Looking forward to it, I’ll be taking the front row again when we fire up the engines on Monday. Reddick and Larson are holding down positions five and seven respectively, while Hamlin is further back in 17th, with Blaney trailing behind in 24th.
