On Tuesday, Monika Kos, a beloved presenter in Perth since 1990 for channels Seven, Ten, and currently Nine, was spotted shedding tears following her meeting with the news director of Nine News Perth, Gareth Parker.
During my recent travels, I unexpectedly crossed paths with Fiona Dear, who had just been appointed as the new national director of news and current affairs at Nine. Our encounter coincided with her brief visit to the state. The meeting ignited speculations among onlookers that Kos might be one of the first casualties in a potential wave of job cuts.
Despite Nine denying Dear’s attendance at Kos’s meeting, there seems to be a sense of caution among staff as they prepare for Ms. Dear’s arrival and the anticipated layoffs at the network, treading carefully like one might on eggshells.
When Daily Mail Australia contacted Nine about Kos’s tears, the network denied she had been sacked.
Rather than suggesting otherwise, the spokesperson emphasized that the news anchor, aged 56, was merely saddened by a matter concerning a fellow team member.
Viewers recognize her as ‘Mon’. Her graceful demeanor and soothing broadcast tone place her at the forefront of award ceremonies, sporting events, and charitable programs.
She previously fronted Seven’s since axed local version of Today Tonight and Ten News First.
On air at 4 pm is Kos, anchoring Nine’s evening news, preceded by popular game show “The Tipping Point” that boosts viewer numbers for the 6 pm news broadcast.
63-year-old Michael ‘Thommo’ Thomson presents the evening news on Nine, but it has consistently come second to Seven’s nightly news, a position it usually holds.
Amidst the turmoil at my competitor network, Channel Seven, I find myself in the midst of a significant change. Veteran presenters like Brisbane newsreader Sharyn Ghidella, Gold Coast weatherman Paul Burt, and Sydney crime reporter Robert Ovadia have all been let go. This shift is undeniably dramatic within our industry.
Monika Kos is married to Australian media ‘royalty’.
Grant Willesee, her spouse, is a cinematographer who is both the son and nephew of esteemed past figures in national current affairs, Terry Willesee and Mike Willesee.
