In a universe where retirement funds are as unpredictable as a Vogon’s poetry reading, Hostplus, the Australian super fund with more members than a galactic convention, is pondering whether to let its members dip their toes into the swirling vortex of cryptocurrency. Apparently, the good folks at Hostplus have been receiving letters that essentially boil down to, “Why can’t I gamble my retirement on Dogecoin like a proper 21st-century human?”
- Hostplus is contemplating crypto access after members demanded digital assets in their retirement portfolios, presumably because traditional investments are just too… stable.
- If approved, the crypto option would likely launch through Choiceplus, because nothing says “retirement security” like giving people more choices to lose their money.
- SMSF crypto activity is booming, proving that Australians are either financial geniuses or just really good at ignoring warnings about volatility.
According to a Bloomberg report, the fund is considering a model that would allow access through its Choiceplus option. Of course, this still needs regulatory approval and some serious design work, because nothing screams “ready for prime time” like a half-baked crypto plan.
Hostplus, with its 2.2 million members, is one of Australia’s largest super funds. It’s so big, it’s like the Death Star of retirement funds-impressive, but you wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of its investment decisions.
Sam Sicilia, the fund’s chief investment officer, admitted that member requests have kept the issue on the table. He said,
”There’s certainly a demand from some of our members who write in and say, ‘Why can’t I have access to cryptocurrency?’” according to Bloomberg. Translation: “Please let me turn my retirement into a rollercoaster ride.”
Choiceplus: The Crypto Gateway?
Any crypto access would likely be tucked away in Hostplus’ Choiceplus option, the part of the fund where members can pretend they’re day traders without actually quitting their jobs. It’s like giving someone a toy stock market, but with real consequences.
Sicilia optimistically suggested the offer could arrive as soon as the next financial year, provided the structure gets approved. He also said, ”We’d love to get regulatory tick-off, even if it means waiting another six months,” which is fund-speak for “We’re willing to wait, but not too long, because FOMO is real.”
The proposal is still in its infancy, needing regulatory approval and addressing consumer protection issues. Because, you know, nothing says “retirement security” like investing in an asset class that can lose 50% of its value in a weekend.
Australia’s superannuation market is massive and tightly regulated. APRA oversees financial institutions with about A$10.1 trillion in assets, while industry reports suggest total superannuation assets will hit A$4.5 trillion by late 2025. That’s a lot of zeros, and a lot of opportunities to make-or lose-a fortune.
Crypto in Retirement: The Next Big Thing or a Galactic Mistake?
While large super funds have been cautious about direct crypto access, some parts of the market are already diving in. AMP, for instance, introduced Bitcoin futures exposure in May 2024, because why not add a little extra spice to retirement portfolios?
Self-managed super funds (SMSFs) remain the go-to for Australians who want crypto in their retirement portfolios. BTC Markets reported a 69% year-over-year increase in SMSF registrations on its platform in the 2024-2025 financial year. Clearly, the allure of turning retirement savings into a high-stakes game of “Will it moon or will it crash?” is irresistible.
So, will Hostplus jump on the crypto bandwagon? Only time-and a lot of regulatory paperwork-will tell. In the meantime, members can continue to dream of retiring on a yacht bought with Bitcoin profits, or, more likely, eating ramen noodles while staring at their depleted portfolios. Such is life in the galaxy of modern finance.
