Kate Mulgrew says a Dal/Gwyn romance is right for Star Trek: Prodigy

As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of this iconic franchise, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for the potential romantic development between Dal and Gwyn in Star Trek: Prodigy. Their unique dynamic as captain and first officer, coupled with the lack of traditional command structure, presents an intriguing backdrop for a blossoming relationship.

As Star Trek: Prodigy concluded its first season, Dal (Brett Gray) and Gwyn (Ella Purnell) exchanged a kiss, suggesting a blossoming relationship beyond friendship. However, this romantic angle wasn’t developed in the second season. The third season might offer an opportunity for the writers to delve into this potential romance, given that Gwyn and Dal are now working closely together. Despite Gwyn being the captain of the new Protostar and Dal serving as her first officer, their dynamic is unconventional compared to traditional command structures.

Kate Mulgrew, during an interview with CinemaBlend at San Diego Comic Con, expressed her viewpoint as to why a romantic relationship between Captain Janeway and Chakotay (played by Robert Beltran) on Star Trek: Voyager was unlikely due to certain complications. However, she speculates that a romance between characters Dal and Gwyn could be possible without the same challenges that might have affected Captain Janeway’s romantic prospects in the series.

I was the first female Captain. There was no way I was going to say, ‘Chakotay in my Ready Room for a little dingle dangle.’ It’s fair in this story. It’s right in this story. It wasn’t in mine. And I think that the tension between those two is terrific as long as you [points to Kevin and Dan Hageman] sustain that.

Originally designed for younger audiences, “Prodigy” provides lessons about Starfleet fundamentals while delving into themes of friendship, loyalty, and teamwork that resonate with most young people. It tackles common life experiences such as self-doubt, triumphs, errors, and the search for identity. Given these elements, it’s fitting that relationships are also a focus, offering valuable lessons for those experiencing their first romances.
