House of the Dragon: The Battle of the Gullet explained

As a veteran gamer who has weathered countless digital storms and battled through endless virtual realms, I must say that the anticipation for season 3 of HBO’s House of the Dragon is as exhilarating as conquering the final boss in an epic RPG. The Battle of the Gullet, teased at the end of season 2, has me on the edge of my seat like never before.

The second installment of HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” the prequel to “Game of Thrones,” has concluded, initiating a lengthy anticipation for season 3. Instead of resolving matters, the episode titled “The Queen Who Never Was” primarily established the grounds for upcoming conflicts. We witnessed the Lannister army approaching the Red Fork river, Starks crossing the Twins’ bridge, the Triarchy sailing towards the Gullet, the Hightower march alongside the Honeywine river, Criston Cole preparing for Harrenhal, and Daemon leading an army of Riverlords. The upcoming season of “House of the Dragon” promises numerous battles ahead.

Among all those battles, the Battle of the Gullet stands out as the most destructive. This naval conflict was the initial one I mentioned from the book “Fire & Blood” by George R.R. Martin, and it lays the groundwork for several other clashes. In the HBO series, “The Queen Who Never Was” leads us to the precipice of this battle. At this point, Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) and the Lyseni ship commander Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn) are commanding a fleet of Triarchy ships from the Free Cities, intending to break Corlys Velaryon’s (Steve Toussaint) blockade around King’s Landing, which has been in place throughout season 2. Simultaneously, Corlys Velaryon is preparing to sail with his bastard son and firstmate, Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim), to reinforce his forces.

Beyond Corlys and the Triarchy, numerous entities will engage in the Battle of the Gullet. If the season 2 finale piqued your interest about what unfolds as vessels collide in the waters surrounding King’s Landing, you’ve come to the right spot. Let’s delve into the events transpiring during the Battle of the Gullet as detailed in the book, but beware: MAJOR SPOILERS await regarding crucial character outcomes.

House of the Dragon: The Battle of the Gullet explained

What happens in the Battle of the Gullet?

1) In the annals of Westeros and Martin’s fantasy world, few naval battles can match the devastation wrought by what is known as the Battle of the Gullet. This battle stands out not only in Westeros’ history but also across the entire recorded timeline of this realm. The assailants were the combined forces of the Triarchy – composed of the Free Cities of Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh. They launched a sneak attack on the Sea Snake’s blockade at the Gullet, aiming to lift the siege that had been cutting off food and essential supplies to King’s Landing. The northern Triarchy force struck directly against the enemy ships, using the weather as camouflage for their approach. Meanwhile, the southern force circumvented them entirely and invaded Driftmark Island.

In an intensifying battle, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon takes part on his dragon Vermax, while the Triarchy remains unfazed since their sailors were once engaged with Daemon’s dragon Caraxes in the Stepstones and are less fearful of dragons than typical Westerosi nobles. However, when other Dragonseeds enter the fight, the tide changes dramatically. Hugh Hammer rides Vermithor, Ulf White flies Silverwing, Addam of Hull soars on Seasmoke, and a commoner girl named Nettles controls a wild dragon called Sheepstealer. Notably, in HBO’s adaptation, it seems that Rhaena Targaryen is taking Nettles’ place instead. This is all depicted in House of the Dragon.

As a gamer, I find myself swept away by the relentless might of the dragonriders, who managed to shatter the Triarchy’s fleet. However, this victory came with an immense price. My trusted companion, Vermax, was ensnared by a grapnel attached to one of their ships, plunging us both into the water, wounded and battered. The impact sent us crashing into the remnants of another ship, where we became entangled and ultimately dragged down as the stricken vessel sank beneath the waves, taking my dragon with it into the depths.

While Jace skillfully dislodges himself from Vermax’s saddle and holds on to debris to keep himself above water, he meets an unfortunate end. Triarchy sailors ruthlessly pepper him with crossbow bolts, ultimately causing his demise. Submerged in the ocean once more, Jace disappears beneath its waves, never to be found again.

As a gamer, I can’t help but reflect on the devastating impact of the Gullet battle. Jace undoubtedly bears the heaviest toll, yet the consequences stretch far beyond him. The once prosperous Spicetown on Driftmark was mercilessly razed and never recovered, while Corlys Velaryon’s castle High Tide, along with his nine voyages’ treasures, were reduced to ashes. The Triarchy, initially fielding around 90 ships, was left with a mere 28 survivors.

Clearly stated, the Battle of the Gullet was filled with immense sorrow and despair. As noted in “Fire & Blood”, upon being praised for his triumph over the Triarchy, Corlys Velaryon lamented, “May I never again taste victory like this.”

It remains uncertain how “House of the Dragon” will depict the Battle of the Gullet until season 3, likely airing in 2026. However, when it does, be prepared for the battle scene to generate a lot of conversation among viewers, much like the Battle of Rook’s Rest did this season.
