7 most disappointing moments from Game of Thrones
As a long-time fan of the realm and its inhabitants, I have to admit that Game of Thrones left me with a bittersweet taste. While the show was revolutionary, it wasn’t without its flaws, and there were moments that felt like they missed the mark.
As a devoted fan, I’d confidently say that Game of Thrones stands among the greatest TV shows ever produced. Yet, even in its brilliance, it wasn’t immune to errors. The series, as captivating as it was, had its stumbles that left fans disgruntled. To this day, many of us find it hard to separate our love for the show from the lingering disappointment over the compromised final season.
Here are seven instances from “Game of Thrones” that left many viewers feeling let down, some of which have sparked widespread criticism while others remain debatable. A few may even be missed by some fans. Don’t hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments or on Winter is Coming’s Facebook page and X account. Let’s start with the initial event that shaped the series as a whole.
Ned Stark’s death
In the series Game of Thrones, it quickly became apparent that no character was invulnerable to death, as shown by the brutal slaying of Ned Stark, who was the most upright individual in the show. Tragically, this execution was carried out under the command of the despicable King Joffrey Baratheon. Consequently, it became prudent not to grow overly fond of any character, as they might meet an untimely end.
The Night King’s death
When the primary villain in a series is eliminated, it should be spectacular and indelible. The moment needs to be distinctly memorable. The television series ‘Game of Thrones’ achieved this when they took out the Night King, the commander of an undead horde seeking to conquer Westeros.
In a surprising yet fitting turn of events, it was Arya who proved to be the ideal warrior to vanquish the Night King. She had spent years honing her skills and enjoyed enough respect among her peers to catch him off guard. The joy that erupted when she brought down the Night King was palpable. This twist on our expectations was satisfying, yet it made sense given Arya’s fixation with death. However, let’s not forget that this girl who seems so enamored with mortality, chose to end the physical embodiment of it on Earth – a chilling yet fitting conclusion.
The climactic confrontation against the Night King seemed underwhelming considering his extensive build-up, and the fearsome image we’d been led to expect. The battle’s outcome was hard to discern due to dim lighting, and the Night King disintegrated too swiftly. It felt like it should have been more epic than it turned out to be.
John Snow’s resurrection
In simpler terms, people find themselves divided when it comes to Jon Snow. They either adore him or dislike him profoundly. Some see him as whiny or courageous. However, there’s general consensus that his resurrection at the end of season 5 was unnecessary. Most actions he takes since then either don’t significantly impact the series or could have been performed by another character.
Brienne of Tarth sleeping with Jaime Lannister
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a mix of joy and dismay. On one side, my heart swells seeing Brienne of Tarthe finding companionship with someone who appreciates her, respects her, and perhaps even loves her deeply.
Jamie going back to Cersei
After Brienne of Tarth surrenders to Jamie for the first time, he slips away in the dead of night to rejoin his sister, who is not just a sibling but also a lover and emotional twin in turmoil. Over the seasons, Jaime experienced growth and attempted to establish an individual identity beyond Cersei, only to find himself back at square one.
Daenerys Targaryen’s ending
As a long-time fan of George R.R. Martin’s epic saga, I found myself deeply disappointed by the abrupt shift in Daenerys Targaryen’s character at the end of Game of Thrones. While some viewers may have been taken aback by her transformation from benevolent leader to ruthless tyrant, I believe that her descent into madness was not out of left field but rather a culmination of events hinted at throughout the series.
A more straightforward rephrasing could be: Although it might have been preferable if Daenerys had fallen into madness only to conquer it, there was no chance for her to atone for her actions, which were questionable at best. Tragically, she was slain by a man who once loved her, and her dragon incinerated her throne. Following the treachery, violence, and brushes with death, she met her end, seemingly without anyone showing concern.
Bran becoming king
Prior to discussing Bran Stark, let me bring up a shocking event known as the Red Wedding. This heart-wrenching scene left many viewers speechless and those who read the books equally stunned, as they hadn’t anticipated this event. It was as disheartening as Ned Stark’s demise due to the loss of cherished characters. However, it also made for riveting television.
Then there’s Bran becoming the King of Westeros.
There’s nothing in the world more powerful than a good story. Nothing can stop it. No enemy can defeat it. And who has a better story than Bran the Broken?
Originally, the finale was expected to be a fitting end to a phenomenal series, but unfortunately, it fell short and might not be surpassed. By the conclusion, Bran is merely king in title, as he often seems lost in thought during his duties. Is this the satisfying climax that fans anticipated from such a highly-regarded show? I can almost hear the sighs of disappointment from readers. Please remember, I’m simply relaying the information; I didn’t create it.
