Jonathan Majors speaks out about Robert Downey Jr.'s return to Marvel and Avengers: Doomsday

As a gamer who’s seen more than a few plot twists in my time, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu with Marvel’s latest decision to ditch Kang for Doctor Doom. It’s like they’re hitting the reset button on a game just when things were getting interesting.

Following several months without comment since the assault accusations levied against him last year, Jonathan Majors has now voiced his thoughts on Marvel’s recent decision to choose another path for their forthcoming productions.

At San Diego Comic-Con last week, Marvel surprised everyone by announcing that the next Marvel movie will be titled Avengers: Doomsday, instead of the previously expected “Avengers: Kang Dynasty.” Moreover, Robert Downey Jr. disclosed his return to Marvel in a leading role as the film’s antagonist, Doctor Victor von Doom.

Earlier on, Marvel had been crafting a narrative centered around Kang the Conqueror, portrayed by Jonathan Majors. Initially appearing as He Who Remains in season 1 of Loki, Kang was also slated to be the antagonist in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and subsequently in Loki season 2. The title for the next Avengers film, initially planned as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, was expected to feature the Avengers uniting to combat numerous Kang counterparts across various realities.

Yet, when it emerged last year that Majors was under assault accusations by his former girlfriend, Marvel found themselves in a challenging position of rearranging an entire series of films and finding a new antagonist for the Avengers to confront. Consequently, Majors was removed from various projects, including those at Marvel, and has remained largely out of the spotlight until now.

As a longtime Marvel fan and someone who has followed the career of actor Iwan Rheon (Majors), it was intriguing to read about his recent interview with TMZ regarding Marvel’s choices for upcoming projects. In the conversation, Majors expressed his feelings about Marvel’s decision to focus on Doctor Doom instead of Kang, a character he is particularly fond of.

As a long-time fan of Marvel movies, I can understand and appreciate the sentiments expressed by Major when he spoke about Mr. Downey and Mr. Miller. Having followed their careers since the early days of Iron Man and Deadpool, it is heartening to see them receive such warmth and support from fans and peers alike. Their talent and unique contributions to the Marvel universe have undoubtedly earned them a special place in the hearts of many, including myself.

For decades, Downey struggled with legal issues due to drug addiction, but in 2008, he made a successful return to Hollywood as Iron Man. Since then, he’s been recognized as a household name, the head of the Avengers team, and even an Academy Award winner. Similarly, Ezra Miller, famously known for playing Flash in the DC universe from 2014 to 2023, has encountered numerous controversies such as allegations of assault, harassment, abuse, and grooming. Despite these accusations, Miller remained in the role of the superhero, appearing in The Flash which was released in summer 2023.

Marvel was developing Kang as a potential threat on par with Thanos, while also positioning Majors as one of the upcoming breakout superhero stars. However, given his recent allegations and Marvel’s current challenges following a series of underperforming films, it might be wiser to move away from Kang for now and explore new possibilities. As to whether the collaboration between Robert Downey Jr. and Doom will prove beneficial remains to be seen. But with the addition of the X-Men and Fantastic Four to the MCU, they can introduce a fresh crop of characters to Marvel enthusiasts, hopefully revitalizing and rejuvenating the studio with a new burst of energy.
