So, I was thinking about Tim Roth and his recent work as Emil Blonsky – aka the Abomination – in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. He’s been talking, and I just learned whether or not he’d be up for more adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It sounds like he’s open to the possibility, which is great news for fans!
Tim Roth first portrayed the Abomination in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk. He didn’t appear again for several years, making a quick cameo in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Later, in the She-Hulk series, Jennifer Walters acted as his lawyer in court.
Tim Roth recently discussed what might be next for his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While promoting his new film, Peak Binders: The Immortal Man, he was asked about Abomination’s future, but Roth said he doesn’t have any information about it.
Roth was surprised to be asked back for She-Hulk, but he thoroughly enjoyed working on the show. He especially loved collaborating with Tatiana Maslany and Mark Ruffalo, who has famously played Bruce Banner/Hulk since The Avengers. Roth described Ruffalo as “one of the funniest people you’ll ever work with.”
The actor said he’d be open to returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, explaining that he enjoys playing the character because it’s so unique.
Honestly, I was totally surprised when they asked me to return! My first thought was, ‘Really?’ But then I realized how much fun I had with the project. I especially loved working with Tatiana, and Mark Ruffalo is seriously one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. If the opportunity came up again, I’d jump at it – it’s just a really unique and quirky character to play.
In The Incredible Hulk, Blonsky receives an injection of the same serum that created the Hulk, giving him superpowers of his own. He ultimately becomes the villain known as Abomination, leading to an epic showdown where the Hulk emerges victorious.
However, Abomination doesn’t die and eventually reappears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Shang-Chi. There, he’s shown fighting Wong in an underground fight club.
This explains how his story leads to his appearance on She-Hulk. Years later, Blonsky is forbidden from transforming into Abomination. However, he breaks the rules of his release from prison, gets arrested, and then escapes with assistance from Wong.
As a big Marvel fan, it’s looking like we probably won’t get a second season of She-Hulk, which is a shame. If we do see Blonsky, or Abomination, again in the MCU, I’m guessing it’ll be in a future movie or another Disney+ show. The way they ended his story in She-Hulk – sending him off to Kamar-Taj – definitely left the door open for more appearances, even without a Season 2.
After her role in She-Hulk, Roth has continued to work in television, appearing in shows like Last King of the Cross and Tiny Beautiful Things. She’s also starred in several films, including Poison, Classified, Tornado, and 260 Days.
His new project is Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, a full-length movie continuing the story of the popular Peaky Blinders series, which ran for six seasons between 2013 and 2022. He will play John Beckett, a character who supports the Nazis.
Although it’s currently unclear if Tim Roth will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s stated he’d be eager to play Abomination again if Marvel Studios asks him.
