Overwatch 2 6v6 Currently Under Consideration, As Blizzard Opens Conversation
As a dedicated fan of Overwatch since its inception, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia every time the topic of 6v6 multiplayer comes up. The original Overwatch experience was unlike any other, with the chaos and unpredictability of twelve players on each team creating moments that were nothing short of magical.
Supporters have been advocating for the classic 6vs6 setup in Overwatch 2 for quite some time, leading Blizzard to share their rationale behind choosing 5vs5 multiplayer instead of the original game’s 12-person chaos. In essence, one primary reason for opting for 5vs5 was to grant “more control and influence” to each player.
Despite the ongoing debate about bringing back 6v6 gameplay in Overwatch, many players continue to express their desire for the original, chaotic experience. Game Director Aaron Keller acknowledges this in a detailed blog post, stating that while 6v6 has its advantages, 5v5 is “less mentally demanding” compared to 6v6.
“At the beginning, a game featured twelve players on every team. However, I explained the reasons for transitioning away from this setup. Yet, it doesn’t mean that having ten players per side is without its benefits. Certain moments and chaos that emerge in a game with twelve players don’t quite materialize when there are fewer,” Keller explains.
In the heat of Overwatch 2, there were instances when the action became a whirlwind of events, making it challenging to follow along. Yet, this very chaos was part of its allure! The excitement in Overwatch 2 doesn’t quite reach the same level of frenzy as before.
Keller points out that in Overwatch 2, the 5vs5 mode results in significantly shorter wait times for players, allowing them to join matches more promptly instead of having to endure lengthy queues. However, Blizzard intends to explore various “special events” and experiment with diverse “team compositions” in Overwatch 2’s 6vs6 format, assessing how well this mode might fit into the game.
Based on my experience as a long-time gamer and follower of the gaming industry, I can tell you that creating tests for a multiplayer game like Overwatch 2 is no small feat. With Keller’s revelation that optimizing technical performance for 12 players, considering the upgrades and additions to the game, will be a complex process, I fully understand why this will take some time.
As a gamer in a 6vs6 setting, I can tell you firsthand that upgrades can make a big difference for us players. These enhancements can cause older systems to struggle keeping up with the game’s fast pace of Overwatch. It’s crucial for us to enjoy a smooth gaming experience on all platforms. However, carrying out these improvements might take several seasons and an immense amount of work. Additionally, longer queue times could be an unwelcome side effect.
As a dedicated gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that the prospect of 6v6 eventually making it into Overwatch 2 is undeniably exciting. However, based on my observations and knowledge of Blizzard’s development process, it seems like a long and arduous journey lies ahead.
