Paddy Considine was thrilled to return to House of the Dragon “one last time”
As a dedicated fan of “House of the Dragon,” I must admit that I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed with Daemon Targaryen’s (Matt Smith) frequent forays into his own troubled psyche. Don’t get me wrong, it’s intriguing to see glimpses of past characters like young Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock), Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell), and even the late King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine). However, I have to confess that I’m starting to tire of these flashbacks.
Since Daemon Targaryan (Matt Smith) entered Harrenhal’s decrepit, spectral castle, he has been experiencing unsettling dreams and terrifying nightmares. Frankly, I must confess that I am growing weary of delving so frequently into Daemon’s psyche. Nevertheless, this recurring theme permits the series to reintroduce characters from “House of the Dragon” season 1 who have been absent for some time. Milly Alcock resurfaced as young Rhaenyra Targaryen, Nanna Blondell reemerged as Daemon’s deceased wife Laena Velaryon, and Paddy Considine made a comeback as Daemon’s brother, the late King Viserys I Targaryen, who met his demise at the conclusion of season 1.
In the initial season, Considine’s portrayal of the tormented monarch stood out, making it enjoyable to witness his return to the Iron Throne. He repeated the identical “heir for a day” address given in the series debut, albeit with a distinct twist. Subsequently, he appeared in an almost surreal sequence where Daemon opted for consoling their late sister Aemma Arryn’s grieving brother (played by Brooke, who made a brief reappearance as a deceased character) instead of preparing his own succession to the Iron Throne.
On Instagram, Considine expressed his joy at being back on the set of “House of the Dragon” on HBO: “I was there for a short time, but let me tell you, I was overjoyed to revisit @houseofthedragonhbo and be reunited with my cherished colleagues. I’ve truly missed each and every one of you. It was a bittersweet experience as I put on the costume for the last time and bid farewell. Since then, I’ve felt a void in my life that this show once filled with purpose and duty. To my esteemed cast members, I long for your company. Watching your characters develop and flourish, some even taking flight, is an incredible sight to behold. Shout-out to Hannah Ecclestone and Christian Goddard for the exceptional make-up and costumes. You both are the finest. A big thank you to Ryan Condal for the opportunity, albeit a painful one (the knife was indeed sharp). To my surprise, the art department presented me with a sculpture of myself as a parting gift. I will hold this treasure close.”
The knife that Considine mentions likely refers to the Valyrian steel dagger, which is traditionally handed down among the Targaryens. It’s possible that showrunner Ryan Condal provided him with a prop for filming. Regarding the statue, take a look at the image of King Viserys in Considine’s collection of photographs.
That final picture of Considine and Smith with their arms around each other is a keeper.
Although Coinsidine currently lacks notable projects, given his exceptional abilities, it’s likely that he will secure any role he pursues. May he discover new opportunities that provide him with a “strong sense of meaning and duty.” Following his involvement in House of the Dragon, I would certainly consider watching anything else he features in.
