Star Trek: Voyager could have lost out on Jeri Ryan because of one scene

As a huge fan of Star Trek: Voyager, I can’t help but reflect on the pivotal moment when Jeri Ryan joined the show as Seven of Nine. When I first heard that Jennifer Lien’s character Kes was being written off and replaced with a former Borg drone, I was intrigued by the prospect of what this new character could bring to the table.

In Star Trek: Voyager, Jeri Ryan joined the cast to portray the character Seven of Nine, who replaced Jennifer Lien’s role as Kes when her character was removed from the series. Seven of Nine had been taken by the Borg as a child and thus lacked adult memories. During Ryan’s audition for the part, there was one scene that left her uncertain if she should continue with the tryouts.

When Ryan was asked to try out for two acting roles, one of which was from “Revulsion,” where Seven of Nine, sensing Harry Kim’s [Garrett Wang] advances, instructed him to disrobe in the mess hall. Had that been her only option, Ryan shared with TV Zone [through Screenrant], she would have declined the audition.

It was not one of my favorites, I personally found it terribly predictable and a bit cheesy. If it had been that scene alone there wouldn’t have been a question in my mind; I would have never done the audition.”

As a longtime fan of Star Trek: Voyager, I’ve grown to appreciate the complexities of the characters and their backstories. However, I must admit that in one particular scene, my suspension of disbelief was shattered. The way Wang interacted with Seven of Nine left me feeling disappointed and frustrated.

I’ve always appreciated the complexity of Wang’s character in “Star Trek: Voyager,” even if he wasn’t given many opportunities for development. He wasn’t portrayed as a womanizer like Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), which is why that particular scene felt disrespectful to both him and Ensign Kim, Ryan.
