As a fervent supporter of progressive politics and social justice, I am thrilled to see Vice President Kamala Harris stepping up as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw. Her tenacity and resilience have long been an inspiration to me, especially as a woman of color in a male-dominated political landscape.
On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s new nominee. This unexpected move has generated widespread conversation, even reaching the entertainment industry.
As a long-time follower of American politics and the entertainment industry, I was both intrigued and dismayed by the recent political shakeup that unfolded over the weekend. The sudden turn of events, which occurred on Sunday, left many in the Democratic party and Hollywood grappling with the implications.
A number of celebrities were quick to throw their support behind Harris.
In 2016, I supported her during her Senate campaign by standing behind her. I did the same when she ran for vice president, and I still back her today. (Rhimes, the successful TV producer known for “Bridgerton” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” expressed this on Instagram.)
“Once more, a sister steps in to save the day,” Lee posted on social media. (Note: “sista” is slang for “sister” and “da rescue” can be paraphrased as “the day” or “the situation”.)
For several decades, Democratic presidential hopefuls have drawn support from notable figures in the entertainment industry. During this current election season, a high-profile event headlined by Julia Roberts and George Clooney garnered over $30 million for the Biden campaign. Later on, Clooney penned an opinion piece in The New York Times, urging Biden to withdraw from the race.
Other notable figures expressed their backing. This group consisted of “Watchmen” and “Lost” producer Damon Lindelof, who previously urged Biden to withdraw, and Robin Thede, creator of “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” Thede proposed the idea of Jon Stewart, host of “The Daily Show,” joining Harris as her vice presidential candidate.
Sorkin expressed loyalty to Harris following his publication of an opinion piece in the New York Times, where he advocated for the Democratic party to consider nominating Mitt Romney instead of Biden.
On Sundays, the “West Wing” and “Social Network” scriptwriter used Joshua Malina’s X account to retract previous statements and express support for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign by saying, “I was wrong, Harris for America!”
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), which is a labor organization that represents film and television crew workers, additionally supported Harris’ campaign by putting their signature on it.
As a devoted supporter, I respect Biden’s choice not to seek re-election and am fully behind the efforts to elect Vice President Kamala Harris come November.
“Together, we aim to prevent Donald Trump, who disregarded an IATSE picket line back in 2004, from having another term filled with infringing upon workers’ rights, weakening labor unions, and threatening our democratic institutions.”
Various actors and musicians backed Harris on social media as well.
As a passionate fan of “Abbott Elementary” and an admirer of the talented Sheryl Lee Ralph, I cannot help but be intrigued by her recent social media post expressing her support for Vice President Kamala Harris. I remember vividly when she made her stance clear back in January 2019 – her words resonated with me and many others, filling us with hope and optimism for the future.
Several musicians also spoke up.
Charli Xcx expressed, “Kamala is my brat,” in her writing, with “Brat” being the title of her latest album that has sparked numerous fan edits and memes featuring Kamala Harris in recent weeks.
Some artists, including Kaling, Cher, Streisand, Eichner, and Ruffalo, expressed gratitude towards Biden for his presidency and encouraged people to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming election.
“I’m grateful, Mr. President,” Actress and producer Kaling expressed in her Instagram post, sharing a picture of their meeting with Biden.
