10 new comic books to watch out for this week (July 17)
As a long-time comic book fan and collector, I’m beyond excited about the upcoming releases in this list! The rich storylines and talented creators behind these titles promise an immersive and thrilling reading experience.
Based on comicbook.com’s report, DC comic books are now being released on Wednesdays instead of Tuesdays after decades of adhering to the old schedule. This change began on July 3 with titles like “Absolute Power” No. 1. Currently, this is the new norm.
For Marvel, Image, and DC Comics enthusiasts, here’s delightful news: All forthcoming comic book releases from these publishers will drop on the same day. To help simplify your decision-making process, ComiXology has curated a list of ten essential new issues set for release on July 17.
Wonder Woman No. 11
- Writer: Tom King
- Artist: Daniel Sampere
In “Absolute Power” comic book issue 1, not only is Wonder Woman enduring a brutal mental and physical struggle, but sadly, her powers have been taken from her. It falls upon Justice League Dark to intervene and help our heroine. But here’s the twist: did Task Force VII secretly seize their magical abilities as well?
Superman No. 16
- Writer: Joshua Williamson
- Artist: Jamal Campbell
If you believe that powerlessness can hinder Superman, you’re underestimating the Man of Steel. Superman would face challenges even in realms where he’d usually hesitate due to lack of his powers. He’s headed to the Magic Realm.
As I watch the chaos unfold in the Absolute Power trailer, I can’t help but wonder if Amanda Waller will uncover our secret hideout within the Fortress of Solitude. At the 46-second mark, the Fortress is engulfed in flames and Superman takes to the skies, leaving his fiery home behind. Upon his return, he might bring newfound powers and a heavy heart.
Additionally, the talented artist Jamal Campbell makes his comeback in Joshua Williamson’s “Superman” series from DC Comics. His arrival coincides perfectly with this upcoming comic book crossover event.
Titans No. 13
- Writer: Tom Taylor
- Artist: Chris Samnee
In issue No. 12 of Titans, Evil Raven realizes she’s unable to access Dick Grayson’s thoughts as they had planned. Although she’s currently allied with her father Trigon, this revelation might stir confusion within her. Will the malevolent side of Raven recognize the error of her ways? Or will the benevolent Raven resurface and support her teammates?
Phoenix No. 1
- Writer: Stephanie Phillips
- Artist: Yasmine Putri
In the movie “X-Men: Fall of X,” Jean Grey and the Phoenix formed a bond. As a result, they’ll journey through the universe together to prevent tragedies. Their debut teamwork will center around a distress signal from the Nova Corps concerning a black hole endangering hundreds of lives.
Destro No. 2
- Writer: Dan Watters
- Artists: Andrei Bressan, Adriano Lucas
In the realm of the Energon Universe, even the most notorious villains like Destro garner affection from their audiences. Yet, an intriguing twist unfolds: a hidden conflict exists amongst the wicked. Here, Cobra Commander and Destro present a united front, but beneath the surface, they harbor separate goals. On paper, they collaborate; in reality, they clash.
Nightwing No. 116
- Writer: Tom Taylor
- Artist: Bruno Redondo
Heartless relentlessly disrupts Dick Grayson’s life. In “Nightwing” issue 115, we’ll discover how Dick departs from Bludhaven. If the cover is an indicator of things to come, Deadman seems to be a factor and may be the cause of Nightwing regaining his ability to fly once more.
Iron Man No. 20
- Writer: Gerry Duggan
- Artist: Andrea Di Vito
After the conclusion of their battle against Orchis and Nimrod, Emma Frost and Tony Stark find themselves in a new phase of their relationship. Given that Tony has indicated they’ve split up in the last issue, it seems unlikely that they are now married. However, one can always hope for an unexpected turn of events.
Ultimate X-Men No. 5
- Writer: Peach MoMoKo
- Artist: Peach MoMoKo
In simpler terms, ComiXology announces that the long-time tormentor of Armor has unmasked himself. While it’s possible that this is the Shadow King from the Ultimate Universe, it could also be Jean Grey, Mr. Sinister, Apocalypse, Magik, or any other mutant from the Marvel Universe. We just don’t know which one yet.
Namor No. 1
- Writer: Jason Aaron
- Artist: Paul Davidson
As a longtime fan of Marvel Comics and underwater adventures, I can’t contain my excitement for Jason Aaron’s new series about Namor, the Sub-Mariner! Having witnessed his exceptional storytelling during his tenure on Avengers, I have no doubt that this title is worth adding to my collection. But there’s more to it than just the masterful hand of Jason Aaron.
Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter No. 1
- Writer: Tom Taylor
- Artist: Jay Kristoff
The “Dark Knights of Steel” tale is yet another captivating Elseworld story by DC Comics. Next in line is an intriguing concept featuring Deathstroke as a Viking warrior, possibly even assuming the role of Odin.
Prior to delving into this current issue, the author suggests that you first check out the preceding 12 installments. These issues are an enjoyable read and offer fresh perspectives on familiar characters.
