The 5 best shows to stream this summer 2024 (and 3 to skip)

As a long-time fan of Batman and the dark, gritty world of Gotham City, I couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader”! Growing up, Bruce Wayne was one of my favorite superhero characters. The combination of his intelligence, wealth, and determination to protect the citizens of Gotham from harm resonated with me in a way that few other heroes could.

Summer 2024 shows to stream

Orphan Black: Echoes, new series (spinoff)

As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of Krysten Ritter’s work, I can’t contain my excitement! It’s no secret that I’ve always got her back, but this time it’s not just about her – I’m thrilled to bits about the upcoming “Orphan Black” spinoff. This sci-fi thriller is a worthy successor to the original series masterminded by John Fawcett and Graeme Manson. The intriguing plot unfolds in the same universe as “Orphan Black,” but fast-forwarding us to the year 2052 – nearly four decades after the initial storyline.

At present, only the first four episodes of “Orphan Black: Echoes” are accessible on AMC and AMC+ for streaming. Fear not, as there are still six more episodes left in this season, with the finale scheduled for August 25th. Joining Tatiana Maslany (Ritter) in this installment are Keeley Hawes, Amanda Fix, Avan Jogia, and other talented actors.

Lady in the Lake, new series

Apple TV+ has been impressing viewers this year with a string of hits. Among them, I highly recommend the legal drama “Presumed Innocent” which is currently streaming and a must-watch before the season finale. Fortunately, there’s more to look forward to as another enticing series, “Lady in the Lake“, is set to keep us engaged on the platform.

Starting July 19, Apple TV+ will unveil the first two episodes of “Lady in the Lake,” a limited series that I’m really excited about. New episodes, each one containing an installment of this intriguing story, will drop weekly thereafter, with the finale on Aug. 23. And here’s a heads up, folks – since it’s a limited series, there won’t be a second season!

Batman: Caped Crusader, new series

Starting off August on Prime Video, beginning August 1st, is the animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader.” A few years ago, I might have hesitated to jump on board with another superhero show due to saturation. But my interest has been piqued! I’m especially thrilled about this one because Bruce Wayne is among my favorite characters and there’s so much depth to explore with Batman and the gritty city of Gotham. Plus, there was uncertainty regarding its release during the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger. With that hurdle overcome, who else is looking forward to this nostalgic treat?

Only Murders in the Building season 4

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to announce that one show we can’t get enough of is making a comeback: “Only Murders in the Building.” Get ready for another serving of laughter and suspense with its enticing fourth season! For those unfamiliar, this series follows me and my newfound friends Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short). We all live in the same apartment complex, but our paths rarely cross until we discover a shared passion for true crime. But when an actual murder occurs in our building, you can bet your last dime that we’ll put on our detective hats and dive headfirst into solving the mystery!

As a huge fan of “Only Murders” myself, I can’t contain my excitement as we approach the release of its fourth season on Hulu, coming August 27th! If you’re still behind, don’t worry – you’ve got a few weeks to binge-watch the first three seasons and join us in this addictive mystery ride. And if you haven’t jumped aboard yet, now’s your chance! Don’t miss out on the captivating comedy-drama that keeps everyone talking. Stream “Only Murders” today!

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2

As a dedicated gamer and lover of intriguing stories, I sometimes crave more depth and complexity than what Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” offers. Fear not, fellow story enthusiasts! If you’re yearning for an epic adventure, give Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” a try.

Beginning August 29, stream the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” on Prime Video. This captivating and enigmatic tale transports us back to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Featured in this series are Morfydd Clark, Lenny Henry, Sara Zwangobani, Dylan Smith, and more remarkable actors.

After excitedly watching the highly anticipated new and returning shows of the summer, it’s time to discuss the series we’re not as enthusiastic about. Bear in mind, this isn’t a judgment on anyone else’s preferences. Not every show that debuts is a must-see. The abundance of options is what makes this an enjoyable experience for us, and this is just my take.

Shows to skip this summer 2024

The Umbrella Academy season 4

As a long-time fan of quirky and intriguing television shows, I have grown particularly fond of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. However, after binge-watching the first two seasons, I must confess that I’m feeling rather underwhelmed by the announcement of its final season on August 8th.

As a huge fan of quirky and intriguing TV shows, I can’t help but feel elated at the news that “The Umbrella Academy” is returning for its third season, albeit a shorter one. With only six episodes slated to drop on Netflix on Aug. 8, this may be a brief reprieve for those of us with packed schedules. But fear not, because this stellar cast, led by Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher, promises to deliver yet another thrilling adventure that’s sure to leave us wanting more. Having watched the first two seasons multiple times, I can attest to their ability to captivate audiences with their unique blend of humor, action, and drama. So while a shorter season may be a disappointment for some, I choose to look on the bright side and eagerly anticipate the return of this extraordinary series.

Those About to Die, new series

If we’re discussing topics that have lost their appeal for us, don’t miss out on “Those About to Die,” premiering on Peacock on July 18. If ancient Rome is still on your mind, this historical drama based on Daniel P. Mannix’s book will be right up your alley. For a sneak peek, we’ve included the series trailer above, which provides a good overview of what to anticipate.

An excellent advantage of this series is its prominent cast led by Anthony Hopkins, a renowned actor recognized for his exceptional portrayal of villainous and intimidating characters. If you’re fond of the genre, it’s definitely worth watching. For others, it might not be their cup of tea. The entire season, consisting of 10 episodes, will be available to stream starting July 18.

Snowpiercer season 4

As a long-time fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, I’ve seen my fair share of shows that left me feeling underwhelmed by their endings. The first season of “Snowpiercer” was one such experience for me. I watched it with great anticipation, but the way the story concluded left a sour taste in my mouth. I had every intention of continuing on to season 2, but life got in the way and before I knew it, I’d let it slip through my fingers.

Which of these shows will you be watching and which are you skipping?
