Director Joe Carnahan believes the 2010 A-Team movie failed because audiences didn’t respond to it, despite his plans for it to be the first in a series of three films.
The movie The A-Team, based on the popular 1980s TV show, came out in June 2010 but wasn’t a financial success. While it earned $177 million worldwide, it cost $110 million to make, which led to the cancellation of any planned sequels or future movies in a series.
I was really fascinated to read a recent interview with director Joe Carnahan over at Empire. He’s been looking back on The A-Team after all these years, and he honestly believes the film didn’t do as well as it could have because the marketing just missed the mark. It’s also great to hear he talks about how close the cast became – they really seemed like a team on set! You can find his full thoughts below.
We really missed the mark with how we promoted this movie. We should have planned for a whole series of them. Making ‘The A-Team’ felt like a good step towards directing a superhero movie.
The actors clearly bonded during filming, and that strong connection really shows on screen. Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, despite having no prior acting experience, was incredibly convincing as B.A. Baracus – he actually delivered a better performance than Mr. T did in the role.
Directed by Joe Carnahan, who also co-wrote the screenplay, The A-Team is about a group of former soldiers from the Iraq War who were wrongly accused of a crime. After escaping from prison, they work to prove their innocence to the U.S. Military.
The film features a star-studded cast including Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Sharlto Copley, Patrick Wilson, Jon Hamm, and many other talented actors like Brian Bloom, Gerald McRaney, Terry Chen, and Omari Hardwick.
While poor marketing played a role, the A-Team remake’s box office failure was also due to its critical reception. Critics acknowledged the strong cast but felt the movie strayed from the original show’s lighthearted and outlandish spirit, replacing it with noisy, confusing action. It currently has a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences giving it a slightly more positive score of 66%.
The movie adaptation of The A-Team wasn’t a big success, failing to impress audiences or perform well in theaters. However, director Joe Carnahan continued to make exciting action films, including Boss Level (2020), Copshop (2021), and the upcoming The Rip (2025).
You can never really say never to The A-Team, so even now, a return could still be possible.
