Nintendo’s Emio teaser was for a new Switch detective game out soon

As a long-time fan of the Famicom Detective Club series, I couldn’t contain my excitement when Nintendo finally revealed the mystery behind their latest urban legend game, “Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club.” Having grown up playing the original games, “The Missing Heir” and “The Girl Who Stands Behind,” I was eager to see how this new entry would build upon the franchise’s rich legacy.

One week after hinting at a horror urban legend game deemed unsuitable for certain users, Nintendo unveiled the secret behind “Emio”: It’s the latest installment in the 35-year-old Famicom Detective Club adventure game series and will be released next month.

In a recent Nintendo video, series producer and writer Yoshio Sakamoto introduced “Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club,” a new game based on an unique urban legend created for the title. According to Sakamoto, Emio is said to emerge before weeping women, pledging them a perpetual smile. However, this enigmatic figure is actually a murderer, leaving his fatal victims with paper masks bearing cheerful grins.

At the Utsugi Detective Agency, players take on the role of an assistant private investigator. Their mission: aid the police in solving a chilling Emio murder, reminiscent of unsolved cases from 18 years prior. Players will collect clues, converse with witnesses, and closely examine testimonies to reveal The Smiling Man’s hidden truth.

Sakamoto expressed that “Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club” will have an bold storyline, and the finale could spark controversy among players. He encourages fans to share their thoughts and theories on the game’s mystery once it has been solved. The producer referred to his latest creation as the pinnacle of the “Famicom Detective Club” series, which began in 1988 with the graphic adventure title “The Missing Heir.” This was followed by “The Girl Who Stands Behind” in 1989.

In 2021, Nintendo brought back those classic interactive mysteries from the original days for the Switch with new versions named Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Behind the Door.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be able to add another exciting title to my collection come August 29th. The third installment in the beloved “Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club” franchise is making its way to Nintendo Switch! Can’t wait to dive into this classic detective mystery game and unravel the mysteries hidden within.
