Crash Bandicoot Artist Says Crash 5 Was Cancelled

As a long-time fan of the Crash Bandicoot series, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness upon hearing about the cancelled fifth mainline game from Toys For Bob. I’ve grown up with Crash and Spyro, playing every entry in the series since the original Crash Bandicoot back in the late 90s. The thought of a new Crash game being developed and then ultimately scrapped is disheartening.

A developer at Toys For Bob, where an artist worked, revealed that they had begun creating a fifth primary installment in the Crash Bandicoot series, but unfortunately, the project was ultimately scrapped.

As a longtime fan of video games and an avid follower of the gaming community, I was thrilled when I came across a tweet from concept artist Nicholas Kole about a cancelled project he had worked on in the past. At first, I, like many other enthusiasts, were inquisitive about another abandoned game titled Project Dragon, and we eagerly asked Kole if it could have possibly been a spin-off in the Spyro franchise.

I once had a conversation with Kole where he shared, “It wasn’t Spyro, but someday people will discover the myth of Crash 5 – a game that never saw the light of day – and their hearts will be shattered.”

I often find myself pondering the meaning behind “that never was,” wondering if we’re discussing a canceled project that had already gone through development stages or if it never even made it past the initial pitching phase in the case of Crash, the video game.

I can’t help but reflect on what could have been if there were more installments in the iconic Crash Bandicoot series beyond the fourth one, “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.” While that game was undeniably good, it didn’t quite reach the heights of brilliance we experienced during the golden age of the franchise, when Naughty Dog was at the helm.

As an avid fan, I’m excited to share that this year, Toys For Bob parted ways with Activision. Subsequently, they inked a publishing deal with Microsoft for their upcoming project. However, the future of Crash Bandicoot remains uncertain at the moment.

Someday, people will discover that it wasn’t Spyro after all, but rather a missed opportunity for Crash Bandicoot’s fifth game. This revelation is bound to sadden many.
