So, a bunch of suits from central banks, fancy institutions, and the private sector decided to have a little chat in São Paulo (yesterday, obvs) about turning money into digital tokens. Because who needs physical cash when you can have blockchain, right? The MERGE São Paulo event was basically a financial geek-fest, but with better coffee.
In the panel “Tokenization of Money: CBDCs, Tokenized Deposits and the Future of Digital Liquidity” (catchy, I know), we had Bruno Grossi from Inter, Jaime Pradenas Baeza from the Central Bank of Chile, and Nayam Hanashiro from LNET. Luis De Magalhães from BeInCrypto moderated, probably trying to keep everyone from nerding out too hard.
The Real Issue: Tech’s a Mess
Bruno Grossi dropped the mic (metaphorically) by saying the biggest problem is that our financial systems are as fragmented as my attention span. Tokenization, he claims, could be the “lingua franca” of tech, making systems talk to each other like they’re at a cocktail party. Stablecoins and tokenized central bank money? Basically, the cool kids trying to make friends.
Chile’s Take: Money’s Just Trust with a Fancy Name
Jaime Pradenas Baeza was all, “Innovation in payments? Been there, done that.” His main worry? Settling transactions with tokenized assets. The Central Bank of Chile did a little experiment (a POC, because acronyms are cool) to settle tokenized assets without launching a public digital currency. Spoiler: it’s complicated.
He also brought up an IMF taxonomy (yes, more acronyms) that breaks down how transactions settle on blockchain. From central bank-only platforms to mixed models with the private sector-it’s like a financial choose-your-own-adventure.
“Money is trust,” Pradenas Baeza said, basically summing up every relationship ever.
Drex: Brazil’s Digital Money Experiment (with a Plot Twist)
Grossi spilled the tea on Drex, Brazil’s central bank digital money project. After testing with 16 financial institutions, they realized Ethereum’s privacy solutions were about as mature as a teenager’s sense of humor. So, they took a step back, ditched blockchain (for now), and focused on simpler use cases. Because sometimes you just need to walk before you run.
“Drex is an experiment,” Grossi said, which is what I say about my life every Monday morning.
12 Central Banks, One Project: Latin America’s Financial Group Chat
Nayam Hanashiro introduced CB Web3, a project where 12 central banks from Latin America and the Caribbean are basically playing financial Sims. They’re testing digital currencies, cross-border settlements, and probably arguing over who gets to be the banker. All the code and learnings will be open-source, because sharing is caring.
Pradenas Baeza confirmed the region’s central banks are cooperating, swapping notes like high school students before a test. Chile’s participation in CB Web3? Still TBD, but they’re definitely in the group chat.
The Question No One Wants to Answer (But Needs To)
The panel was asked what urgent question needs answering in the next 12 months. Hanashiro said it’s about balancing private sector innovation with public institutional tracks, all while keeping digital sovereignty and financial stability. Basically, how to keep the cool kids from taking over the playground.
Pradenas Baeza wants to know how different forms of digital money can coexist without turning into a financial Hunger Games. And Grossi? He’s waiting for AMM solutions to grow up and save the day.
So, there you have it. Latin America’s financial future is a mix of blockchain, trust issues, and a lot of acronyms. Stay tuned, because this is one drama that’s just getting started.
