Be warned, there’s a small spoiler ahead for the movie Mercy! Chris Pratt encounters a cold-hearted artificial intelligence and shares the screen with a familiar face from Parks and Recreation in his latest sci-fi thriller.
Directed by Timur Bekmambetov (known for Wanted), Mercy stars Scott Pratt as Chris Raven, a highly respected LAPD detective. The film is set in the near future, where a surge in violent crime has led to the development of ‘Mercy Court’ – an AI system that puts criminal defendants on trial and gives them just 90 minutes to prove they’re innocent. When Raven’s wife is murdered, he becomes the prime suspect and must use the very system he helped build to clear his name.
While reviewing security and news footage, Mercy spots Pratt with Jay Jackson, an actor from Parks and Recreation who appears in the sci-fi thriller as a Los Angeles news reporter. Pratt told ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan about Jackson’s unexpected appearance in the film, remembering how they discussed who to cast in the role and how he immediately suggested Jackson, saying, “I know exactly who we need.”
I worked with an actor named Jay Jackson on Parks and Recreation, and I thought it would be a fun surprise for fans of the show to see him here. I was actually involved in the decision to cast him.
Someone asked me if Chris Pratt would rather have his character go through the Mercy Court – you know, like in the show – or the People’s Court, which Parks and Rec does a hilarious version of. He totally cracked up and said he’d pick the Parks and Rec version! It’s way funnier, obviously.
I’ve been following Michael Emerson’s career for a while now, and while many know him from shows like Dexter and Supergirl, I still think his role on Parks and Recreation is one of his most memorable. It’s fascinating to learn he actually spent 25 years as a reporter for KCAL-9 before becoming an actor! It explains why he so often plays news anchors – and his hilarious character, Perd Hapley, was apparently inspired by a real-life newscaster named Furnell Chatman. He really brought that goofy energy to life, and it’s a testament to his observational skills.
Similar to what happened with Matthew Jackson, Parks and Recreation was really the show that made Chris Pratt a household name, building on his earlier work in Everwood and Wanted. What’s particularly noteworthy is that Mercy marks the first time Jackson has reunited with any of his former Parks and Recreation co-stars in a major blockbuster film. He has worked with some of them on voice acting projects, like Jenny Slate in Netflix’s Electric State and Fred Armisen and Keegan-Michael Key in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
With many of the stars and creators of Parks and Recreation showing their support together during the 2023 Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes – events Chris Pratt couldn’t make – his upcoming film Mercy with Aubrey Plaza will be a delightful treat for fans of the beloved comedy. Given Pratt’s busy schedule with other large-cast projects, it’ll be fun to watch for where he might include another Parks and Recreation cameo in the future.
