The success of the found footage film Cloverfield naturally led to a sequel, announced for 2016. What surprised audiences was the casting: while the first film featured relatively unknown actors, 10 Cloverfield Lane starred established names like John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg – who later directed Prey and Predator: Badlands – 10 Cloverfield Lane proved to be a significant financial success, earning $110 million on a budget of just $15 million.
Dan Trachtenberg’s follow-up to Cloverfield was even more critically acclaimed than the first film. 10 Cloverfield Lane currently has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a significant improvement over the original’s 78%. Many reviewers appreciated the change in style, moving away from the found footage look of the first movie to a more conventional cinematic approach. As the 10th anniversary of 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s release approaches, and with talk of Trachtenberg potentially returning to direct another Cloverfield sequel, it’s a perfect time to recognize this outstanding science fiction follow-up.
10 Cloverfield Lane Wasn’t Supposed to be a Cloverfield Film, and That Is Why it Works
The success of 10 Cloverfield Lane may be due to its unique origins. It started as a low-budget horror film called The Cellar, written by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken. Later, Damien Chazelle – known for La La Land and Whiplash – helped revise the script to prepare it for production.
After Paramount saw connections between the story and the movie Cloverfield, and with J.J. Abrams’ approval to make it a follow-up of sorts, the film was retitled 10 Cloverfield Lane. The original ending, which involved a nuclear attack, was also altered. However, 10 Cloverfield Lane doesn’t actually mention the first Cloverfield film, and the aliens and their spaceships don’t appear to be visually related to it.
The 2010s saw a lot of sequels and reboots, with popular franchises like Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, and Godzilla dominating theaters. 10 Cloverfield Lane wisely shifted away from the original Cloverfield‘s plot, telling a separate, self-contained horror story. This was a smart move, as it avoided tiring audiences who had seen the first film, while still benefiting from the recognizable Cloverfield name to attract viewers.
Ironically, distancing itself from the original Cloverfield actually benefited this sequel, and could offer a useful model for other movie series that audiences are starting to lose interest in. Ultimately, this approach made it the strongest film in the Cloverfield franchise.
John Goodman Gives a Career-Best Performance in 10 Cloverfield Lane
The strength of 10 Cloverfield Lane is its gripping, contained story and well-developed characters. When Michelle, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, wakes up in Howard’s bunker and is told the world is ending, the audience is immediately left wondering what’s really happening. John Goodman’s performance as Howard is brilliantly unsettling – he’s both intimidating and seems on the verge of losing control. This unpredictability is what truly makes the film scary.
John Goodman gives a standout performance in the film, truly shining as his character develops. His portrayal of Howard is frighteningly unpredictable, and the more we learn about his past, the more terrifying he becomes.
John Goodman is usually cast as friendly, relatable characters, such as Sully from Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. He doesn’t often play villains, and when he does, he’s remarkably convincing and disturbing.
The ending of 10 Cloverfield Lane leaves some questions about what happens to Howard, but Michelle escapes and goes in search of safety. There haven’t been any announcements about a follow-up to the film, despite the existing agreement between the filmmakers and Paramount, the studio that made it. Although director Dan Trachtenberg is likely to continue working on the Predator movies, fans would love to see what happens to Michelle and Howard, or even a completely new story within the Cloverfield universe.
10 Cloverfield Lane is now available to stream on Paramount+.
