The story of The Mandalorian and Grogu is heading to movie theaters, marking the first time a live-action TV show from the Star Wars universe will be expanded into a film. The show’s huge success and the popularity of characters like Din Djarin and Grogu made a movie a natural next step. Trailers have teased exciting appearances from familiar faces like Zeb and Embo, building anticipation for the film.
As fans get ready for the new Mandalorian & Grogu movie, many will likely revisit earlier seasons of The Mandalorian, as well as related shows like The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. But to really get excited for the film, it’s also worth checking out Star Wars video games – both current and older titles – that share similar themes and could provide important background for this next chapter in the story.
Star Wars: Squadrons Replicates The Space Flight Experience
The Mandalorian will have a new ship, an ST-70 Razor Crest II, in addition to his updated Naboo N-1 starfighter. Based on the trailers, the upcoming film promises plenty of exciting space battles, just like the series. To experience that same thrilling feeling of intense, interstellar combat, fans should check out Star Wars: Squadrons.
Released in 2020, Star Wars: Squadrons lets players experience the thrill of piloting famous Star Wars ships firsthand. Developed by Motive Studio and Electronic Arts, the game is a realistic flight simulator set in the same era as The Mandalorian, after the Empire’s fall. Players can battle for both the remnants of the Empire and the New Republic in a compelling story with multiple perspectives.
Star Wars: The Old Republic Adds To Mandalorian Lore
While the game isn’t directly based on the Old Republic era, elements from that time – like the Mandalorians and Jedi – could still be important to the story. Plus, with the Old Republic being brought back into the larger Star Wars universe, now is a great time to explore it through this game.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is a continuation of the Knights of the Old Republic storyline, taking place after the original games. It includes popular characters like bounty hunters and Mandalorians, and expands on the history of those groups. Originally published by Electronic Arts and created by Bioware (later continued by Broadsword Online Games), the game – often called SWTOR – surprisingly feels similar in tone to the early seasons of The Mandalorian, and might even provide important background to the show’s mythology.
Star Wars Outlaws Takes Players Into The Criminal Underworld
So far, The Mandalorian has explored the dark side of the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on criminals and bounty hunters. We’ve already met some well-known characters in this world, and the show is likely to introduce even more. The inclusion of characters like Embo and the return of the Hutts demonstrate this trend. That’s what makes the upcoming game Star Wars Outlaws, developed by Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment, particularly interesting – it clearly fits with the show’s direction.
Although Star Wars Outlaws takes place during the height of the Empire – unlike The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is set after the Empire’s fall – the game still immerses players in the same underworld that Din Djarin frequents. Beloved characters like Qi’ra and Hondo play significant roles, and it’s clear how the events of Outlaws will influence the galaxy by the time The Mandalorian’s story begins.
Star Wars Battlefront II Establishes A New Era
The Mandalorian takes place after the Galactic Empire has fallen and the events of the battle on Jakku. Despite this new beginning, iconic characters like Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett still appear in the story, and might even be involved in future films. Because of these connections to the wider Star Wars universe, many fans recommend playing the 2017 game Star Wars Battlefront II, developed by DICE and Electronic Arts.
As a huge fan, I’m really excited that Battlefront II is diving into the major conflicts from all over the Star Wars timeline. And it’s not just about seeing those battles – we actually get to play as iconic characters like Boba Fett! The game covers everything from the Clone Wars with the Separatist droids to the Empire’s last stand on Jakku – all events that directly shaped the world we see in The Mandalorian. But what’s even cooler is that the story campaign takes you right up to the beginning of the New Republic era, so it officially fits into the current timeline. It feels like everything connects!
Star Wars: Bounty Hunter Is Part Of Mando’s History
As a huge fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the history behind the Mandalorians. It’s amazing to think about all the warriors who came before Din Djarin and shaped their culture. Jango Fett is a really interesting case – he wore the Mandalorian armor and fought like them, but he didn’t always follow their rules. He’s a complicated guy, but honestly, without him, Din would never have crossed paths with his ‘son,’ Boba Fett. And if you really want to dive into Jango’s story, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is a fantastic look at everything he accomplished.
Originally launched in 2002 by LucasArts, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is no longer considered official Star Wars lore, unlike Star Wars: The Old Republic which exists in a more ambiguous space. Despite this, the game significantly expands our knowledge of the Bounty Hunter world and lets players experience life as a skilled Mandalorian. Jango Fett is portrayed as a formidable character, and the game delivers compelling backstory alongside exciting, cinematic fight scenes.
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge Is Set In A New Age
Similar to what the original TV series did, a new game could expand on the backstory and legends that influenced the sequel trilogy. For example, the explanation of Snoke’s origins and the Emperor’s return through cloning is a key part of this. A game set after the events of The Mandalorian & Grogu could also provide a fresh look at how the galaxy has changed since the movies.
The appeal of Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge lies in its immersive storytelling. Released in 2022 by ILMxLAB and Disney, this virtual reality experience for the Oculus Quest offers a collection of stories connected to the Galaxy’s Edge area of Disney Parks, where you can often encounter Mando and Grogu. Set in the Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, the experience provides a fresh look at the criminal underworld and the groups operating there.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Adds Further Mythos To The Jedi
The Mandalorian quickly became popular with fans because it honored the larger Star Wars universe and brought something fresh to it. The show cleverly draws from different eras of the timeline, primarily focusing on the remnants of the Imperial forces after the Empire’s defeat. It naturally fits with a game that depicts the Empire at its peak and expands on the history of the Jedi.
Players of the 2019 game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, developed by Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts, already know how important it is to Grogu’s story. Cal Kestis’s actions in the game—stopping the Empire from identifying potential Jedi—directly saved Grogu and others like him. Kestis’s impact on the Jedi Order and his fight against the Empire likely played a part in the rise of the remaining Imperial leaders.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Shows The State Of Bounty Hunting In The Galaxy
The show The Mandalorian & Grogu will continue to follow Din Djarin and Grogu as they work as bounty hunters for the New Republic, pursuing criminals and other individuals. While bounty hunter games are rare, the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order surprisingly encourages players to take on that role, all while continuing the story during the height of the Empire’s power.
In the 2023 game from Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts, players meet Caij Vanda, who tasks Cal with completing various bounties. Successfully finishing these tasks leads to an encounter with Boba Fett, who’s intrigued by the deals. Beyond that, the game expands on Jedi history, connecting to the High Republic era. With the potential for more Jedi lore related to Grogu in The Mandalorian & Grogu, the High Republic could become even more important in the future.
