8 Questions That Yellowjackets Needs to Answer in Season 2

As a fan who has been captivated by the gripping narrative of Yellowjackets since its debut, I can confidently say that this series is a masterpiece of suspense and mystery. The storytelling is so intricate and layered that it leaves you questioning every detail, from the tragic death of Travis to the emergence of Lottie’s cult.

Originally, this article appeared in 2023. We’re re-sharing it today since Yellowjackets Season 1 is now available for streaming on Netflix.

After shows such as Lost and Game of Thrones, Yellowjackets has sparked an abundance of fan theories centered around the enigmas embedded within its narrative.

The popular Showtime series, which divides its focus between the survivors of a 1996 plane crash who were stranded in the Canadian wilderness for 19 months and their lives 25 years later, quickly became a sensation when it premiered in November 2021. As season 2 is set to stream on March 24 and air live on March 26, viewers are eagerly anticipating what will happen to the Yellowjackets next.

The television series “Yellowjackets” has already been renewed for a third season, with co-creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson stating their intention for the show to span five seasons. As explained by Lyle in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, while some shows can continue indefinitely, this isn’t one of them due to its deeply serialized nature and focus on character development. Instead, they aim to reach a satisfying conclusion without stretching things out unnecessarily. The creators have so far been on track, and while season 2 largely follows their original plan, they always discover new elements along the way, making it slightly surprising.

In essence, it’s unlikely that season 2 will resolve all the theories surrounding the mysteries that have been brewing since Yellowjackets debuted. However, there is still reason to anticipate some answers to at least a few of the most intriguing questions that were left unanswered following season 1.

What happened to Shauna’s baby?

One significant plot twist that the show must eventually explain is the mystery surrounding the baby born to teen Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) in the wilderness after the plane crash. In the first season, we learn that Shauna became pregnant with Jeff’s (Jack DePew) child post-crash. However, in the current timeline, adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) and Jeff (Warren Kole) have a daughter named Callie (Sarah Desjardins), but she is only 16 years old, suggesting that she is not the baby born 25 years ago.

Based on cryptic clues from the series and fan speculation, some believe that Shauna’s baby’s death could be a pivotal moment causing the group to split irreversibly. However, Tawny Cypress, who portrays adult Taissa, has explicitly stated that Shauna’s baby will not become anyone’s food.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cypress made it clear that her characters didn’t plan on harming a baby. However, she added with a nod to their shocking act from season 1, “But as for beheading dogs? Absolutely.

Absolutely, it doesn’t guarantee that Shauna’s baby will avoid encountering a different kind of unfortunate incident.

What’s going on with Taissa?

In the final episode of season 1, Taissa’s partner, Simone (played by Rukiya Bernard), uncovered a grisly shrine containing their deceased dog’s head, a damaged doll belonging to their son Sammy (Aiden Stoxx), and what seemed to be a human heart, concealed in the basement of their residence. The enigmatic symbol that repeatedly appeared in the past timeline was also sketched on the wall behind the altar for sacrifice.

The discovery by Simone of a troubling event was contrasted with Taissa learning she unintentionally offended her rival to secure the New Jersey state senator position, hinting at possible extraordinary influences behind Taissa’s surprising triumph. Earlier in the season, we learned that both Jasmin Savoy Brown’s character and her adult version have been doing things without conscious recall while sleepwalking. However, whether the shrine was created by aware Taissa, unaware Taissa, or someone else remains undecided.

Who was Adam, really?

In the end, Shauna, an adult woman, ended up murdering the artist, believed to be named Adam (Peter Gadiot), who she had been secretly involved with. This act followed her discovery that he was deceiving about his background and believing him to be the one extorting Taissa (Tawny Cypress), Natalie (Juliette Lewis), and Misty (Christina Ricci) by threatening to expose a past event. However, it was later revealed that Shauna’s husband Jeff was the actual blackmailer, causing fans to ponder Adam’s true identity.

In the intriguing world of “Yellowjackets”, I was initially led to believe that the character we knew as Adam might have been a grown-up version of young Javi, portrayed by Luciano Leroux in the flashback timeline. He would be the son of Coach Martinez, played by Carlos Sanz, and the younger brother of Travis, first embodied by Kevin Alves in the past and currently by Andres Soto. However, as the show’s creators have revealed, while they initially pondered the idea of Adam being Javi, they eventually chose to take a different path in the storyline.

Co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco explained to Variety that at one point, they considered Adam might be Javi reincarnated, causing trouble for Shauna. However, they quickly dismissed this idea as it didn’t seem authentic or in line with the story they wanted to tell about Shauna’s affair and marriage.

Despite appearing as a mere innocent stranger in the first season, Adam’s substantial screen time suggests there may have been more to him than initially met the eye. Given his demise, it’s plausible that future revelations will uncover additional layers to Adam’s character.

What happened to Javi?

Regarding Javi, the last time we encountered him was in an earlier timeframe, when he was avoiding the Yellowjackets who were experiencing a collective psychosis caused by hallucinogenic mushrooms in their stew during the “Doomcoming” party in season 1’s second-last episode. The next day, Travis initiated a search for his younger brother after realizing he had gone missing, but we are still unaware of whether Javi made it through his time in the wilderness.

It’s rather uncommon that the show creators would have Javi die off-screen without any explanation, considering their original plot for Adam. So, it’s quite possible that Javi will continue to influence the Yellowjackets’ narrative, whether his role unfolds in the past or present.

Did Travis actually commit suicide?

Although Natalie and Travis had agreed never to take their own lives, when Adult Nat and Misty discovered Travis’s body in the third episode of season 1, it seemed like he had hanged himself, suggesting a suicide. However, some peculiar aspects related to his death—such as Misty noticing candles arranged under Travis’s body in a pattern mirroring the symbol from Taissa’s shrine and Lottie being the one who drained Travis’s bank account the day after he passed away—lead us to question if Travis may have been murdered instead.

What was Natalie ‘right’ about?

As Adult Nat and Misty examined Travis’s home prior to finding him deceased, it became clear to Misty that the final message Travis penned before his death was a note saying, “Inform Nat she was correct.

Natty shared with Peppy that she wasn’t sure what Trav’s message implied. However, spectators have numerous speculations about the subject matter, spanning from Jave possibly being alive to Lotta presiding over a secretive group, which might be considered a cult.

What’s the deal with adult Lottie’s cult?

Towards the end of season 1 finale, a mysterious group sporting symbols from the wilderness appeared and kidnapped Natalie as she seemed poised to take her own life in her hotel room. At that exact moment, Suzie, Natalie’s previous sponsor, was leaving a frantic voicemail, informing Nat that Lottie had emptied Travis’s bank account. This implied that the group had been dispatched by Lottie to locate Natalie.

This verification implies that Lottie not only continues to live, but also seems to persist in her exploration of the supernatural powers she claims to have discovered in the wilderness. As Lisco explained to TV Insider, there are strong indications that what began in the wilderness is still active after 25 years, though it has been simmering rather than erupting. However, in season 2 we’ll delve into why it’s about to reach its peak.

Who was killed in the pilot?

The query that has intrigued fans of the show “Yellowjackets” ever since the first scene of its debut is this: Who was the girl that the Antler Queen and her masked accomplices appeared to be pursuing and consuming in the series?

During the first season, many viewers believed Jackie (Ella Purnell) would ultimately be the one to meet a tragic end. However, it’s now clear that she perished from freezing before they resorted to cannibalism. The creators of Yellowjackets, though, have subtly indicated that their ordeal in the wilderness may involve horrors even worse than consuming each other, implying that the initial chilling scene could be a misleading precursor to some as-yet-unknown atrocity.

According to Lisco, if we perform our duties correctly, the actions taken by these young women in the wilderness won’t be the most shocking event. That’s merely the beginning of a much larger story.
