7 years later, Todd Howard says The Elder Scrolls 6 is still „a long way off.” Will it be worth the wait?

If you’re excited about The Elder Scrolls 6, unfortunately, there’s not much new to report. Todd Howard, the head of Bethesda, recently told GQ that the game is still quite a ways from being released. This news comes seven years after the initial announcement at E3 2018, meaning fans have been waiting a long time. Considering The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim came out in 2011, the gap between it and the next installment will be even longer than the one between Grand Theft Auto 5 and 6. The big question is: will fans be patient enough to wait?

The Elder Scrolls 6 is still “a long way off,” according to Todd Howard

Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects. While they’ve traditionally focused on finishing one game before starting another, they’re now working on several things at once. As Todd Howard explained in a recent interview, a large team is dedicated to the Fallout series – including the online game Fallout 76, the popular Fallout TV show’s second season, and the newly released Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition. Howard also stated that The Elder Scrolls 6 is a constant focus for the team. On top of all that, fans are eagerly awaiting the next Starfield DLC, which is rumored to be called Terran Armada and should be released soon.

As a huge Bethesda fan, I’ve always loved their games – Skyrim, Fallout 3, and 4 were all massive for me. But lately, I’ve been starting to worry. While other studios like Obsidian are knocking it out of the park with games like Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, Bethesda’s recent releases haven’t been as strong. Starfield was…okay, and the launch of Fallout 76 was pretty rough. It’s been seven years since they first announced The Elder Scrolls 6, and honestly, I’m starting to wonder if it will actually be worth the wait. If they say it’s still a long way off, are we talking another three years? Or even more? I really hope they can deliver something special after all this time.

The Game Awards shared comments from Howard online, and fans quickly responded. One person posted a funny image of a skeleton sitting in a chair, jokingly showing how long the wait for Elder Scrolls 6 feels. Others offered suggestions, like announcing games closer to their release date – a practice that’s thankfully becoming more common in the gaming industry.

It’s impossible to say for sure when Elder Scrolls 6 will come out, but I wouldn’t expect to see it before late 2027. All we’ve had so far is a very short teaser trailer. Considering how early in development it seems to be, I think we’re looking at several more years of waiting. Bethesda also wants to make sure the game is perfect, and they’d prefer to spend an extra year polishing it rather than releasing it too soon.
