Many excellent films don’t get the attention they deserve right away. While some movies become instant blockbusters, others are just as good but take time to find an audience. Thankfully, with the rise of streaming services, some overlooked science fiction films are finally gaining the popularity they’ve always deserved.
Many of these lesser-known sci-fi movies are still incredibly enjoyable and feel as fresh today as they did when they were first released. They’re all fantastic films that deserve more attention, and it would be great to see their stories continued with sequels.
Edge of Tomorrow Is One of Tom Cruise’s Best Films
Considered one of the best science fiction films of all time, the 2014 movie Edge of Tomorrow features Tom Cruise as Major William Cage, a public relations officer unexpectedly sent into battle. After being forced to fight in an alien invasion, he’s killed on his first day, but then mysteriously wakes up again the day before. Realizing he’s stuck in a time loop, Cage works to find a way out—and maybe even save the world from the aliens.
Despite not being a huge success when it first came out, Edge of Tomorrow has become a beloved cult favorite. It stands out from other time loop movies because of its fast-paced action and clear storyline, which help overcome any minor flaws. Tom Cruise has been trying to make a sequel for a long time, but it will likely only happen if enough fans demand it.
Ad Astra Deserves Better From Movie Fans
In the 2019 film Ad Astra, Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) follows in his father’s footsteps, venturing into space thirty years after the elder McBride disappeared during a risky exploration mission. As Roy travels to Neptune, he seeks answers about his father’s fate and discovers a powerful energy source that could threaten the entire universe.
Man, I really loved Ad Astra when it came out in 2019, but it totally bombed at the box office – it couldn’t even earn back its budget, which wasn’t that high to begin with. Critics and a lot of us sci-fi fans were really into it, though, and felt like it got lost in the shuffle with all the bigger, more explosive blockbusters. Now, seven years later, there’s been some renewed interest, and it’s got me hoping we might see a continuation of the story someday, even though the first film already feels pretty complete on its own.
The Creator Could Have Been the Next Star Wars
Following his work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Gareth Edwards returned to filmmaking in 2023 with his original sci-fi film, The Creator. Set in the far future, the movie depicts a war between humans and advanced artificial intelligence. Joshua (John David Washington) is tasked with a perilous mission: to find and eliminate the AI’s enigmatic creator. However, his mission soon reveals a conspiracy that threatens all of humankind, and the key to it all is a new AI weapon disguised as a baby.
The film always faced an uphill battle to attract a wide audience. Despite featuring exciting titles like Star Wars or Star Trek, The Creator‘s disappointing performance at the box office probably means we won’t see any sequels, leaving this inventive sci-fi movie as a single, complete story.
Annihilation Is a Cerebral Sci-Fi Film
As a huge sci-fi fan, I was completely blown away by Alex Garland’s Annihilation. It’s a really strange, but captivating film about Lena, played by Natalie Portman, a biologist who volunteers for a seriously risky mission into this place called Area X. She goes in with a team of soldiers and they find this incredible, almost psychedelic landscape filled with some truly terrifying creatures. But it’s not just about the monsters; it’s also a really powerful story about Lena facing up to some difficult things in her own life and learning to deal with past pain.
While Annihilation isn’t for all audiences, those who stick with it will find a thought-provoking exploration of difficult feelings like grief, loss, and depression. Though the film stands on its own, a continuation of the story would be a welcome addition, even years after its initial release.
Sunshine Is One of the Most Underrated Sci-Fi Films Ever Made
In the sci-fi thriller Sunshine, directed by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the Sun is fading, threatening all life on Earth. A courageous crew is sent on a critical mission to reignite it, but a catastrophic event jeopardizes their chances of saving humanity before time runs out.
The movie Sunshine features a fantastic cast including Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Cillian Murphy, and Michelle Yeoh—many of whom have become very well-known since appearing in this 2007 film. Although it didn’t do well in theaters when it was released, Sunshine has since gained a devoted following and is a gripping story that deserves to be seen by more people.
Arrival Is Still Denis Villeneuve’s Best Sci-Fi Movie
Before directing the Dune films, Denis Villeneuve created Arrival, a 2016 movie about humanity’s first contact with aliens. When alien spacecraft land on Earth, linguist Louise Banks (played by Amy Adams) is asked to find a way to communicate with them and prevent conflict. With global tensions rising and little time to spare, Dr. Banks works to decipher the aliens’ language, hoping to find a key to understanding them.
Though not as action-packed as some sci-fi movies, Arrival offers a realistic and thoughtful take on how humanity might first encounter alien life. The film is based on actual linguistic principles and features a smart twist that changes how you understand the entire story. Even though it works perfectly well on its own, many viewers would love to see director Villeneuve explore this world further in the future.
