While there’s always room for that classic type, sometimes an actor you wouldn’t normally associate with action gets a chance to shine. Casting someone who doesn’t fit the typical action hero mold – whether they’re built differently or usually work in other types of films – can lead to really interesting and surprisingly successful results.

It’s become increasingly common to see actors known for comedy or drama take on action roles, often surprising audiences. With the release of the new film Normal – featuring a great example of this trend – we’re highlighting five actors who successfully switched gears and proved they can handle action-packed scenes.

Comedy Icon Bob Odenkirk Became An Acrobatic Assassin

Bob Odenkirk is a comedic icon for those who grew up in Generation X. He began his career in Chicago’s comedy clubs and later became a writer for popular shows like Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and The Ben Stiller Show. In the 90s, Odenkirk, along with David Cross, created Mr. Show With Bob and David, a groundbreaking sketch comedy series that, while not a mainstream hit, had a huge impact and helped launch the careers of stars like Jack Black, Sarah Silverman, and Paul F. Tompkins. Though still relatively unknown to many, Odenkirk gained widespread recognition in 2008 when he joined the cast of Breaking Bad as the morally ambiguous lawyer Saul Goodman. He then took on leading roles, demonstrating his dramatic talent and earning critical acclaim. But perhaps the most surprising turn in his already unpredictable career is his recent transformation into an action star capable of holding his own against even John Wick.

The 2021 film Nobody starred Bob Odenkirk as an ordinary, unassuming man who discovers a hidden past as a highly-trained government assassin. The 58-year-old actor surprised audiences with his physical abilities, performing challenging stunts while fighting off numerous opponents. The movie was a critical and commercial success, earning an 84% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $57 million, leading to a sequel planned for 2025. Now, Odenkirk is receiving positive early reviews for his role in the upcoming thriller Normal, where he plays a sheriff taking on corruption in a small town.

Beloved Funnyman Walter Matthau Was Also A Great 70s Tough Guy

Though not traditionally handsome, Walter Matthau became a beloved American actor. Surprisingly, he starred in several gritty crime films during the 1970s, despite not looking like a typical action hero and being well into middle age. This highlights Matthau’s incredible talent; he convincingly portrayed both danger and a tough exterior without losing the dry wit he was known for.

I’ve always loved Walter Matthau, and he really hit his stride with the brilliant heist film Charly Varrick back in 1972. After that, he kept playing these wonderfully tough characters – I remember The Laughing Policeman being a standout, and even Earthquake was pretty epic. But for me, he was absolutely perfect in The Taking of Pelham One-Two-Three from 1974. He plays this stressed-out transit cop trying to deal with a subway hijacking, and it just works. It’s a fantastic showcase for his grumpy, relatable personality in an action setting, and honestly, I think it’s the best movie ever made about New York City.

Indie Favorite Michel Cera Has Some Serious Martial Arts Skills

Michael Cera became known for his unique and charming personality early in his career. He first gained attention as a memorable character on the TV show Arrested Development, and then became a leading actor with the hugely popular teen comedy Superbad in 2007. Because of his small stature and dry, understated acting style, he didn’t initially seem suited for an action movie, but he eventually found the perfect role to showcase his talents.

One of the smartest casting choices in recent decades was Michael Cera in Edgar Wright’s energetic, video game-inspired action film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World from 2010. The movie, adapted from Bryan Lee O’Malley’s popular graphic novels, seemed tailor-made for an actor like Cera, and he delivered a fantastic performance. He could have easily stopped there, but Cera surprised audiences again by appearing in Edgar Wright’s 2025 remake of The Running Man, demonstrating he’s still capable of thrilling action roles.

Melissa McCarthy Busted Doors and Busted Guts

It’s unusual to see women, or actors outside the typical action hero mold, cast in action roles in Hollywood. Melissa McCarthy recently challenged this trend, finding both success and humor in two popular action-comedy films that allowed her to play a strong, capable character.

Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock team up in The Heat, a hilarious buddy-cop comedy directed by Paul Feig (who also directed Bridesmaids). McCarthy plays a wild and unpredictable police officer, getting to engage in chases, tough interrogations, and deliver outrageously funny lines. Bullock gets to play the straight-laced FBI agent who steps in for an injured operative, fulfilling her action-hero dreams.

I really love Spy because Melissa McCarthy’s character is so much more than just a clumsy joke. Unlike some other spy comedies, she’s genuinely skilled in fighting – she’s a properly trained agent, just as capable as her rival, Jason Statham, who is brilliantly funny. It’s refreshing because it avoids making her a figure of fun because of her clumsiness. This lets McCarthy play a believable, genuinely awesome spy, and still be incredibly hilarious at the same time.

Helen Mirren Went From The Queen to A Deadly Assassin

Helen Mirren is known as one of Hollywood’s most elegant and talented actresses. She often plays queens or dignified, upper-class women, and has even won an Oscar for her work. Despite her regal roles, she’s not afraid to take on more physically demanding parts, even later in her career.

The RED movies star Helen Mirren alongside Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and John Malkovich as former spies who are pulled back into the dangerous world they left behind when someone puts a hit out on them. Mirren, who was 65 when the first RED film was released, enjoyed playing a skilled and deadly ex-MI6 agent, and she returned to the role in RED 2 in 2013. Later, she joined The Fast and the Furious franchise, becoming a regular cast member. In these films, she gets to use a distinctive Cockney accent and even do some driving.
