5 Jane Austen characters that could easily be villains

As a voracious reader who has lost count of the number of times I’ve immersed myself in the captivating worlds of Jane Austen, I can confidently say that each character she crafted is as intricate and multidimensional as a finely carved antique figurine. While they may appear flawless on the surface, a closer look reveals chinks in their armor that could have easily led them down a darker path.

Jane Austen penned six completed novels during her lifetime, among them being “Pride and Prejudice”, “Emma”, “Sense and Sensibility”, “Mansfield Park”, and “Persuasion”. Her characters are some of the most renowned in literature, remaining relevant and memorable to this day. One may wonder if any of her characters could have veered towards darkness had certain circumstances been different – let’s explore!

5 Jane Austen characters that could easily be villains

Emma Woodhouse

Emma Woodhouse, a character by Jane Austen, might effortlessly transform into a villain with minimal alterations. She holds herself in high regard, flaunts her wealth, interferes excessively in others’ lives, and can be downright malicious when she desires. Though she undergoes change in the novel, if she were less perceptive or lacked Mr. Knightley, she could have turned into a Regina George-like figure in Hartfield.

Fanny Price

As a passionate gamer, I find myself deeply divided when it comes to Fanny Price from Jane Austen’s novels. She’s either adored for her innocence and high moral standards or criticized for being too rigid. In my opinion, her unwavering nature could easily transform her into a stern, self-righteous antagonist, even without intending to be so. Any character who sticks to their principles that firmly risks treading on the path towards darkness.

Elizabeth Bennet

As a lifelong Jane Austen enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by Elizabeth Bennet’s character. She shares the top spot with Mr. Darcy and Anne Elliot as my all-time favorite characters from her novels. However, if she had indulged in a little less introspection and a bit more mischief, she could have easily become a villain instead of the heroine we all know and love.

Marianne Dashwood

In a less formal and more relatable manner: Younger sister Marianne Dashwood, contrary to her composed elder sister Elinor, is known for her impulsive nature. This spontaneity, while it might seem exciting, doesn’t always lead to the best outcomes, as we saw with Mr. Willoughby. If emotions like heartbreak had driven her to act against him, things could have escalated quickly. It’s not hard to imagine a character from a Jane Austen novel taking revenge to such an extreme that they might even set fire to someone’s mansion!

Mr. Darcy

Hey there! I can’t stress enough how important it is for us, as fellow gamers, to keep our conversations civil. Now, let me share a hypothetical scenario from Pride and Prejudice that I found intriguing: What if Mr. Darcy didn’t listen to Elizabeth’s wise words? Imagine him choosing vengeance instead of self-improvement. He had the means to make her life miserable, being as wealthy and influential as he was.
