Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto franchise is known for creating some of the most well-developed characters in anime. The series, from its resilient main character to its diverse cast of teachers and enemies, continues to expand with new installments. In fact, many believe the continuation of the story through Boruto wouldn’t have been possible without the strong character foundations laid by the original series.
Even though some episodes of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden feel a bit dated now, the series’ best characters undeniably left a lasting impression on fans and inspired other creators. The complex personalities in Naruto helped pave the way for character development in later shōnen anime like Black Clover, Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia.
Haku Is One of the Earliest Examples of True Character Depth In Naruto
The story of Naruto frequently focuses on orphans, and the main character meets many people who understand his difficult childhood. In fact, several of these orphans faced even harder lives than Naruto did, like Haku, a young ninja who traveled with Team 7’s first major enemy.
Haku was fifteen when he first appeared, but he’d already been training with Zabuza for a while. He was a gentle and kind person, which made his partnership with a ruthless ninja like Zabuza surprising. The reason for his loyalty became clear when his past was revealed: his father had murdered his mother and then tried to kill him after discovering their family’s unique inherited ability.
He barely survived a terrible fate until Zabuza rescued him and gave him a new reason to live. Despite knowing he was becoming the kind of person his father and villagers dreaded, he desperately wanted to please Zabuza, the only one who believed in him. Haku, however, always tried to avoid hurting or killing anyone, which frustrated Zabuza, who thought he was being too gentle.
Ultimately, Zabuza’s own compassion led to his downfall. His death made him understand how much he had grown to care for Haku, whom he initially saw only as a tool. Haku’s profound character had the power to touch even a hardened ninja like Zabuza, softening his heart.
Kakashi Hatake Comes Off As Aloof, but it’s an Act
Kakashi initially appears detached and uncaring in Naruto, but this is a facade. He’s actually struggling with the lasting trauma and profound sadness stemming from a difficult childhood that left him feeling hopeless. The mask he wears isn’t just physical; his indifference is a way of concealing his inner pain from himself and others.
When Kakashi was growing up, he greatly admired his father, Sakumo, a famous ninja known throughout the Leaf Village as the White Fang. During a difficult mission, Sakumo prioritized saving his teammates over completing it. The resulting shame and disappointment led him to a deep depression. Kakashi tragically found his father after he died by suicide, an event that deeply impacted Kakashi and was just the first of many hardships he would face.
Determined not to repeat his father’s errors, Kakashi prioritized missions above all else, which often frustrated his teammates. When Rin Nohara was kidnapped, Kakashi initially wanted to continue with the mission, but Obito disagreed. Eventually realizing the importance of saving Rin, Kakashi joined Obito in the rescue attempt. Tragically, Obito was killed in a landslide during their escape. As a final act, Obito asked Kakashi to receive a transplant of his Sharingan, a gift meant to celebrate Kakashi’s upcoming promotion to jonin.
Kakashi experienced a deeply traumatic event when his teammate Rin was captured and turned into a host for a powerful being. He was forced to kill her to end her suffering, a decision he never recovered from. This led to severe PTSD and caused him to push people away, fearing the pain of loss. This painful past heavily influenced how he taught Team 7, as seen in the bell test where he emphasized the importance of teamwork and mutual support.
Itachi Uchiha’s True Depth Is Kept Hidden for Hundreds of Episodes
Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke’s older brother, is a profoundly complex character in Naruto, and his true motivations aren’t fully understood until much later in the story. Initially presented as the reason Sasuke seeks power, Itachi is known for tragically killing everyone in his clan – except for Sasuke. He then intentionally set Sasuke on a path of revenge, a path Sasuke wouldn’t comprehend until it consumed him.
Itachi Uchiha concealed a terrible secret. After the attack on the village by the Nine-Tailed Fox, he was forced to act as a spy for his clan. Danzō Shimura convinced Itachi that his own clan was planning a violent uprising, and manipulated him into believing a massacre was the only way to prevent it. When Itachi’s close friend, Shisui, tried to use his powerful genjutsu to peacefully sway the Uchiha clan, Danzō intervened and stole one of Shisui’s eyes, stopping him.
Before Shisui died, he gave his remaining eye to Itachi, making it appear as though Itachi had killed him. Danzō then convinced Itachi that the only way to save Sasuke and the Uchiha clan was to eliminate everyone else. For years afterward, Itachi repeatedly clashed with Sasuke, hoping to make him strong enough to defend himself against people like Danzō, who wanted to steal Sasuke’s abilities.
Itachi carried a heavy weight of guilt and sadness, which eventually made him very sick. He died facing his brother Sasuke, who had finally become strong enough to defend himself, still keeping his secrets to protect Sasuke. Sadly, Obito and Madara exploited those secrets to control Sasuke and use him in the upcoming Fourth Shinobi World War.
Jiraiya Was Far More Than Just a Pervy Sage
It’s surprising how many Naruto fans primarily remember Jiraiya as a creepy character who spied on women, claiming it was for his writing. While his behavior is definitely a problematic and overused trope in both Naruto and Shippuden, it overshadows the significant impact he had on shaping Naruto’s personality and growth.
Jiraiya had seen a lot of war and suffering, and he was convinced there had to be a path forward that didn’t rely on hate and fighting. While training at Mount Myoboku, a powerful sage had foreseen a child of his – one of his students – who would change the world. Jiraiya spent years searching for this special person, and though he met many potential candidates, only three truly stood out as the one from the prophecy.
Knowing his guidance would shape their futures, Jiraiya dedicated himself to mentoring Nagato, Minato, and Naruto. He initially believed each of them could fulfill the prophecy the Toad Sage had foreseen. However, he lost contact with Nagato, and then Minato tragically died protecting his son. This left Naruto, who ultimately proved to be both the Child of Prophecy and Jiraiya’s most successful student.
While hints of Jiraiya’s complex personality appear in the original Naruto series, Shippuden truly reveals his depth as a character. Many fans remember him as a heroic and influential teacher to Naruto, overshadowing any less admirable parts of his past.
Naruto Uzumaki is the Deepest Character In His Series
I have to admit, it’s easy to see why some people find Naruto Uzumaki really irritating. He’s often loud, kind of rough around the edges, and definitely acts his age – sometimes even younger! But when you consider he’s a lonely kid just desperately wanting someone to acknowledge him, it all makes a lot more sense. He was essentially rejected by his entire village due to something he couldn’t help, and that left him feeling incredibly alone.
Growing up was incredibly difficult for him. After his parents gave their lives to stop the Nine-Tailed Fox, he was often mistreated, even abused, by those who should have cared for him. As it’s an anime, viewers sometimes need to accept the unrealistic aspects of his childhood. He had no one to rely on and lived mostly on instant ramen, which he came to see as the best food simply because it was all he had.
Becoming Hokage isn’t just about power for him – it’s about finally being recognized and respected. He’s always been underestimated, so earning the village’s acknowledgment would mean everything. What’s truly remarkable is that he doesn’t want this strength to get revenge on those who wronged him. He aspires to be the greatest Hokage Konoha has ever had, driven by a desire to protect and lead, not to retaliate.
I’ve always been struck by how consistently determined he was throughout the entire series. He really lived by his own code – his ‘ninja way’ – and never backed down from a fight or broke a promise. It’s incredible to think that someone so young, only seven years old, could make such a strong commitment and then actually follow through with it for the rest of their life. That’s what makes him such a memorable character.
