4 Years Later, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Officially Making A Huge Villain

The fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will introduce a significant shift in how the show handles its villains. Season 4 is set to premiere on Paramount+ on July 23rd. While this season will have the usual 10 episodes, the fifth and final season, planned for 2027, will be shorter, consisting of only 6 episodes.

The trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 suggests a focus on discovering new worlds and alien life. Like season 3, the new season will continue to take bold creative risks that sparked debate among Star Trek fans. However, season 4 also hints at a fresh approach to its antagonists.

Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman, the executive producers of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, recently spoke with Polygon about the plans for season 4. Goldsman, who also co-showruns the series with Henry Alonso Myers, shared that the new season won’t have one overarching villain. Instead, the writers are concentrating on telling more personal stories and exploring the backgrounds of crew members who weren’t part of Captain Kirk’s original Enterprise.

This season will be structured around individual episodes more than previous ones. Unlike seasons one and two, which featured the Gorn as the main villain, and season three with the threat of the Vezda, there won’t be a single overarching enemy. Instead, the show will focus on developing the characters, especially those who aren’t part of Captain Kirk’s main crew, like helmsman Erica Ortegas (played by Melissa Navia) and La’An Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong).

Goldsman explained the transition was both narratively compelling and surprisingly emotional. After working on the show for nearly ten years, letting go was a unique experience.

As a huge Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fan, I was really impressed with how they revamped the Gorn in the first couple of seasons – they were genuinely scary and reminded me a lot of the creatures from Alien. But Season 3 took a different direction, moving away from the reptilian Gorn to introduce a new, ancient threat called the Vezda. It was a cool change, but unfortunately, the Vezda only stuck around for that one season, and their storyline ultimately decided the fate of Captain Marie Batel, played by Melanie Scrofano.

As a huge Trek fan, I’m really excited about seasons 4 and 5 of Strange New Worlds. The plan is to smoothly connect the show to The Original Series, showing how things transition when James T. Kirk—played by Paul Wesley—eventually takes over the Enterprise from Anson Mount’s Captain Pike. And thankfully, season 4 will keep the awesome episodic format we’ve come to love, meaning we won’t be stuck with one giant, season-long villain arc. Just good old-fashioned exploration and adventures!

Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is taking a clever approach by focusing on characters who won’t be joining Kirk’s crew. This will finally explain what happens to Lieutenants La’an Noonien-Singh and Erica Ortegas, and Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley, and why they don’t end up serving on the Enterprise with Kirk.

Akiva Goldsman shared that he’d always hoped to have William Shatner guest star on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Captain Kirk. The idea was to show Kirk remaining on Earth with Edith Keeler (played by Joan Collins), as seen in the classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode, “The City on the Edge of Forever.” Goldsman believes this would have been an incredibly popular and memorable episode.

According to Goldsman, season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the strongest season so far. It will feature a mix of ambitious, unconventional stories and episodes focused on character development, all while staying true to the original Star Trek’s style of avoiding overarching, season-long villains.
