Breaking news from the front lines of the internet: Coinbase, Microsoft, and Europol just banded together and took down a phishing platform so prolific it had more mailboxes than a small town. Oh, and you also get to see 330 domains disappear-like magic, but with fewer rabbits and more code.
When Tech Giants Unite, Phishing Getters Get the Boot
Imagine a nightly news segment where the hosts announce, “We’ve finally stopped the phishing armada. Stay tuned for the charity dinner.” That’s exactly what happened on March 4, when the crypto exchange Coinbase shared that it teamed up with Microsoft, Europol, and a satellite of other insiders to knock down Tycoon 2FA. Same day, Europol handed us the play-by-play of the operation-no doubt it involved a flash briefing from Adele about how to “keep your accounts safe.”
Coinbase’s official statement read (in the grand tradition of corporate press releases):
“We partnered with Microsoft, Europol, and other industry partners to disrupt Tycoon 2FA (Tycoon), a phishing-as-a-service platform used to steal credentials and bypass MFA by capturing session tokens.”
And why does that matter? Because MFA was invented to make hackers do the impossible: convincingly pretend to be you. Turns out Tycoon 2FA figured out how to rent the perfect impersonation costume.
The so-called European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) made the mastermind move, hopping on a shared Slack channel titled “Let’s Take Down Phishing 101.” They distributed intelligence to a legion of volunteer analysts and investigators, which includes anyone who has ever Googled “how to become a cybersecurity professional” and decided to visit the forums.
Since its launch in August 2023, Tycoon 2FA has been the subscription darling for cybercriminals, serving up a buffet of phishing emails to the tune of “Billion! Billion!”-a number so large it nearly broke Google’s servers. The platform let villains peep at live authentication sessions and swipe MFA tokens like a thief at a jewelry store, giving them unauthorized access to about 100,000 organizations worldwide, plus an embarrassing list of schools and hospitals that might still believe “firewall” is a brand of water heater.
330 domains down. Hostiles eliminated.
“As part of the disruption, 330 domains forming the core infrastructure of the criminal service, including phishing pages and control panels, were taken down.”
The heavyweight team behind the takedown included Microsoft and a parade of service providers: Cloudflare, Intel471, Proofpoint, Shadowserver Foundation, Spycloud, Trend Micro, and more. They pieced together the payment flows with the same fascination that viral cat videos inspire. Cryptocurrency turned out to be the fuel in the criminal engine-who knew digital coins could road rage so badly?
Coinbase remains optimistic: “Disruptions like this work best when they’re sustained. We’ll keep partnering with Microsoft, law enforcement, and industry peers to identify operators, raise the cost of running these services, and help prevent crypto from being used to fund cybercrime.”

Because crime is borderless, but governments and tech firms are getting great at karaoke-dividing tracks, sharing beats, and ultimately ending the demo.
