Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again! The ending of the season dramatically alters things for Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). After Matt publicly revealed his identity as Daredevil to unmask and oust Mayor Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), he’s now facing the consequences, which sets up several compelling storylines from the comics that the MCU could explore in season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again.
At the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Daredevil successfully pressured Wilson Fisk into stepping down from his position, giving up his American citizenship, and leaving the country. However, Matt Murdock himself was arrested and sent to prison, which will be the starting point for the show’s third season, currently being filmed. The comics have previously explored Murdock’s imprisonment, and season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again is expected to draw inspiration from several different comic book storylines.
With the return of familiar faces in Born Again season 3 and other promising projects in the MCU like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there are some great story possibilities for Daredevil: Born Again. Now that Daredevil is behind bars and Kingpin is gone, here are 3 Marvel storylines the show could explore in its third season.
The Devil In Cell-Block D” (Iron Fist & The Defenders Return)
A popular comic book storyline often mentioned is “The Devil in Cell-Block D,” part of Ed Brubaker’s Daredevil series. In this story, Daredevil ends up in jail after his identity is revealed, and he has to navigate life behind bars while dealing with other inmates.
So, the finale of Born Again season 2 dropped a pretty big bomb: Matt Murdock is sharing a prison cell with some former members of Fisk’s task force, including Powell and Cole North. But here’s the interesting part – North actually went against Fisk’s orders, seemingly having a change of heart and turning on Powell. This is actually mirroring a storyline from the comics where North goes from being a villain to an ally of Daredevil. It makes me wonder if we’ll see that same kind of redemption play out in season 3, with North potentially becoming a key ally for Matt inside prison. It’s a smart move, and I’m definitely intrigued to see where they take that storyline.
Interestingly, when Daredevil was out of action, Danny Rand (Iron Fist) briefly stepped in to protect Hell’s Kitchen, even wearing Matt Murdock’s costume. Now that Finn Jones is returning as Iron Fist in Daredevil: Born Again along with Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, it’s possible we might see a similar situation play out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Fist has done this before – he previously defended New York, believing Daredevil had died after the Defenders series, and he’d promised Matt he would look after the city.
“Doing Time/Lock Down” (Elektra’s Daredevil, Spider-Man, & The Hand)
Marvel could also adapt the “Doing Time/Lockdown” storyline from Chip Zdarsky’s 2019 Daredevil comic. In that story, Daredevil accidentally kills someone and, wanting to take responsibility, pleads guilty. He’s sent to prison as Daredevil, but his secret identity remains protected. This allows him to keep his mask on while incarcerated, something he wasn’t able to do during his previous imprisonment, as his identity had been re-established.
Even though that specific storyline likely won’t happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – since Matt Murdock has already publicly become Daredevil – other parts of that story could still be used, and some groundwork for them might already be in place within the MCU.
During Matt Murdock’s imprisonment, Elektra Natchios stepped up to become the new Daredevil in a story arc by Zdarsky. She aimed to earn Matt’s trust, as she needed his assistance to create The Fist – a powerful organization meant to oppose the resurgence of the Hand, a dangerous ninja cult. Coincidentally, Elodie Yung, who plays Elektra in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has recently shared videos of her physical training online and has been seen in New York City, where season 3 of the Born Again series is being filmed.
Both Yung’s take on Elektra and the villainous group known as The Hand haven’t appeared in Marvel Cinematic Universe projects since the 2017 miniseries The Defenders. However, The Hand is set to return, battling Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day—but the fight will take place inside a prison.
Before Matt Murdock was imprisoned, Daredevil and Spider-Man teamed up to show New York’s criminals that the city would remain safe even while Daredevil was in jail. Because of this, Spider-Man fighting members of The Hand in prison seems likely to be related to the events of Matt Murdock’s imprisonment in season 3 of Born Again.
“Return of The King” (Wilson Fisk Returns To New York)
The third season of Daredevil: Born Again might take inspiration from the “Return of the King” comic storyline. In that story, Wilson Fisk comes back to the US after being away, determined to regain his power after a setback. He works secretly and even clashes with The Hand, which is intriguing because The Hand is also set to reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Even though Mayor Fisk was ousted and exiled after Matt Murdock revealed himself as Daredevil and exposed Fisk’s illegal activities surrounding his free port, Vincent D’Onofrio is confirmed to reprise his role in season 3 of Born Again.
Because of this, the story of “Return of the King” offers a great model for how Wilson Fisk will likely return to the MCU. The final scene of the show, with Fisk on the beach, even visually echoes moments from that same storyline.
Interestingly, this story previously paired Kingpin and Daredevil as temporary allies against The Hand. The Marvel Cinematic Universe could potentially borrow this idea, adding a fresh and exciting layer to their complex relationship – something audiences haven’t seen yet.
All episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 are now streaming on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.
