After years of waiting, fans of 28 Years Later might finally get a third movie. There was concern the series would end after the second film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, didn’t do well in theaters, leading many to believe a third installment wouldn’t happen.
Alfie Williams, the actor who plays Spike, has gotten fans excited again. He recently posted a photo on Instagram of himself with a crossbow, hinting at what might be to come in the series.
I was so excited to see Williams post a photo with the caption, “It’s Great to be Back!” Everyone in the comments is buzzing, and we’re all hoping it means he’s getting ready to film another movie!
Fans reacted with excitement, with one writing, “Is this hinting at what I’m hoping for?” Another asked if this meant a third installment of the 28 Years Later series was coming, exclaiming, “Let’s go!”
Fans were eager for more after the first two films, and in 2024, it was announced that a third film – and eventually a full trilogy of sequels to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later – was being planned, with Alex Garland writing the screenplays.

Danny Boyle directed 28 Years Later, and Nia DaCosta directed the follow-up, The Bone Temple. These two movies were filmed at the same time. Originally, Boyle was also supposed to direct the third film in the series.
The director of 28 Days Later later explained that Sony didn’t officially approve a third movie at the same time as the first two. Its production would rely on how well the first two films performed financially.

Okay, so everyone loved The Bone Temple – critics were all over it. But honestly, it didn’t make much money at the box office – only $57.6 million worldwide. That’s a huge drop from the first movie, which made $151.3 million! It really had a lot of us fans worried Sony wouldn’t bother making a third one.
Director DaCosta recently told Empire that the film’s poor performance at the box office was surprising. Despite all indicators suggesting audiences would enjoy the movie – things like positive test screenings and high interest – it didn’t attract many viewers.
“I made a great film, and I’m really proud of it, and people liked it.”
After the release of The Bone Temple in January, Sony hadn’t said anything about the third movie, leaving fans wondering what was happening. But a recent post by Williams suggests there’s reason to be optimistic again.
